{"id":2440871,"date":"2019-02-21T16:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-02-21T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/?p=299483"},"modified":"2019-02-21T16:00:00","modified_gmt":"2019-02-21T23:00:00","slug":"thunder-river-theatre-opens-of-mice-and-men-friday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kspn\/local-news\/thunder-river-theatre-opens-of-mice-and-men-friday\/","title":{"rendered":"Thunder River Theatre opens \u2018Of Mice and Men\u2019 Friday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Retirement is a misnomer for Lon Winston.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Since the longtime educator, actor, and theater director <a id=\"N0x1b1c640N0x1c617e0:N0x1b1c640N0x1bef320\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/entertainment\/activities-events\/thunder-river-theatre-founder-lon-winston-stepping-down-after-21-years\/\">stepped away from Carbondale&#8217;s Thunder River Theatre Company two-and-half years ago<\/a> he has been keeping busy on-stage and behind the scnes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">&#8220;I like being involved in a show every year,&#8221; Winston said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Since handing the reins as executive artistic director over to Corey Simpson in 2016, Thunder River founder Winston has directed and designed 2017&#8217;s production of <a id=\"N0x1b1c640N0x1c618a0:N0x1b1c640N0x1bef4d0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/entertainment\/review-shakespeares-the-tempest-at-thunder-river-in-carbondale\/\">Shakespeare&#8217;s &#8220;The Tempest&#8221;<\/a> and 2016&#8217;s <a id=\"N0x1b1c640N0x1c61900:N0x1b1c640N0x1bef560\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/entertainment\/activities-events\/review-rashomon-at-thunder-river-theatre\/\">&#8220;Rashomon.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">&#8220;I am also a permanent member of the board, TRTC&#8217;s theater consultant and I work with Corey to develop our new seasons,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">His latest directorial effort will bring John Steinbeck&#8217;s Depression-era drama &#8220;Of Mice and Men&#8221; to Thunder River<\/p>\n<div id=\"single-mid-script\" class=\"p402_hide\">\n<h2>Recommended Stories For You<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">&#8220;Doing a classic play \u2013 doing any play really \u2013 we are simply creating our model for what we believe that play means,&#8221; Winston said. &#8220;It&#8217;s not right or wrong. It just needs to be new and fresh for us \u2013 and honest.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">He said the biggest challenge for him on this show, and any show he directs, is to make it relevant for contemporary audiences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Winston believes &#8220;Of Mice and Men&#8221; is a love story.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">&#8220;It is a profound relationship between two people. It&#8217;s not a romance relationship, it is caring friendship.&#8221; Winston said &#8220;It must communicate something significant to our audience \u2013 whether it&#8217;s Greek drama, Shakespeare or American classics.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The cast of the production includes Corey Simpson as George. Owen O&#8217;Farrell plays Lennie, with Sonya Meyer as Curley&#8217;s and Colorado stage legend Bob Moore as Candy.
