{"id":2440942,"date":"2019-02-23T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-02-23T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/?p=299656"},"modified":"2019-02-23T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2019-02-23T07:00:00","slug":"committees-kick-off-work-on-new-aspen-airport","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kspn\/local-news\/committees-kick-off-work-on-new-aspen-airport\/","title":{"rendered":"Committees kick off work on new Aspen airport"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The committees that will help determine what <a id=\"N0x1ef0540N0x1ef4690:N0x1ef0540N0x1eca078\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/pitkin-county-commissioners-accept-6-million-grant-for-new-runway\/\">Aspen and Pitkin County&#8217;s new airport<\/a> will look like met for the first time Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">About 140 people attended the kickoff to a year-long process in which one main committee and three subcommittees will drill down on the project, make recommendations and come up with a preferred vision for the airport by November, a spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The main group that will oversee the entire public outreach process will be the Airport Vision Committee. Under that will be a committee focused on the airport experience for customers, while another committee will deal with technical aspects of the project and the third will focus on &#8220;community character.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The Pitkin County board of commissioners will have the final say on the airport project, which will likely come in December, according to a timeline presented Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Proposed plans for the airport include relocating and widening the runway to accommodate a projected new class of regional jets that are quieter and more fuel-efficient but have larger wingspans than the airport can now accommodate. Officials also have presented plans for a new 60,000- to 80,000-square-foot <a id=\"N0x1ef0540N0x1ef46f0:N0x1ef0540N0x1eca348\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/new-concepts-unveiled-for-aspen-airport-terminal\/\">modern terminal<\/a> to replace the current, somewhat ramshackle 47,000-square-foot building.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Together, those two projects are currently estimated to cost between $350 million and $400 million.
