Gayle King discussed stoically facing R. Kelly<\/a>\u2019s outburst during her recent interview<\/a> with the singer when the CBS This Morning<\/em> co-host visited Stephen Colbert and the Late Show<\/em> Thursday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI could see [Kelly] getting more heated. He was upset with me about some of the questions, that\u2019s okay. He was a little irritated, that\u2019s okay,\u201d King told Colbert.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I see Robert getting really upset and he stands out of his seat, my initial reaction is \u2018Oh god, please don\u2019t leave, please don\u2019t leave, please don\u2019t leave,\u2019 because I really thought we\u2019ve seen him storm out of interviews before, so I thought he was gonna do that. And I\u2019m thinking, \u2018I\u2019m not done with my questions, what can I do to save this interview?’\u201d<\/p>\n

King decided \u2013 rather than telling Kelly to calm down, which could further enrage him \u2013 to remain seated \u201cquietly and looking at him\u201d until Kelly\u2019s outburst ended.<\/p>\n

\u201cI never thought that he was gonna hurt me or hit me, I never, ever thought that,\u201d King said. \u201cWhat I was worried about was that he was flailing and hitting his fists so violently, I was worried he would accidentally hit me, but I never thought that he wanted to hurt me in any way.\u201d<\/p>\n

King added of the now-famous photo of her sitting calmly while Kelly stood and yelled, \u201cThe picture was taken by my makeup guy, as you see is a really good photographer. I didn\u2019t even know he was in the room taking pictures.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the second part of King\u2019s Late Show<\/em> interview, the CBS This Morning<\/em> co-host discussed her interview with Kelly\u2019s girlfriends Azriel Clary and Joycelyn Savage<\/a>. While King was supposed to talk the girls without Kelly in the room, the singer snuck back in and loomed over the interview.<\/p>\n
