A new tabacco tax is raising more revenues than anticipated.<\/strong><br \/>Anna Stonehouse\/The Aspen Times<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Aspen\u2019s elected officials took measures Tuesday to ban the sale of all flavored tobacco and nicotine products, fearing that they are contributing to abuse by teenagers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The ban includes menthol cigarettes, and flavored e-cigarettes, vape pens, snuff and chewing tobacco.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cThe focus should be on banning the flavored products, which I believe are marketed to children and they become lifelong customers,\u201d said Dr. Kim Levin, medical officer for the Pitkin County Board of Health, who presented her case to Aspen City Council with Risa Turetsky from Pitkin County Public Health.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cThe political climate is ripe and we thought this was timely,\u201d Levin said, adding municipalities and states have already banned the products.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">She asked council to restrict the sale of flavored nicotine products in Aspen to create a barrier for young users. With a ban, the city could play a preventative role in youth picking up a tobacco or vaping habit, Levin noted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cIt\u2019s a pretty soft sell,\u201d said Councilman Ward Hauenstein, who supported being as restrictive as possible to ban the flavored products, as did the rest of the council.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cIt\u2019s long overdue,\u201d said Councilman Adam Frisch, adding he wants the city to reach out to retailers who sell the products to let them know legislation is coming.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Recent studies show that Colorado has the highest youth rates of e-cigarette use in the nation, and rates for the Roaring Fork Valley are higher than the Colorado state average, according to a <a id=\"N0x1199680N0x1229b20:N0x1199680N0x11b61f0\" href=\"http:\/\/aspen.siretechnologies.com\/SIREPub\/cache\/2\/fl4zkpvjqnfmancml3kifhek\/8446103122019030009523.PDF\">memo<\/a> to council by CJ Oliver, the city\u2019s environmental health and sustainability director. A majority of Aspen High School seniors report having tried vaping, and 1 in 5 Aspen eighth-grade students report having tried e-cigarettes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Levin said they are highly addictive and kids are taking these products to school as they are easy to conceal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cIt\u2019s unbelievable what\u2019s happening,\u201d she told council.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">With Aspen taking local action against a national health epidemic, people will take notice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cAs you know, we attract attention when we do things,\u201d said City Attorney Jim True at Tuesday\u2019s council meeting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Councilwoman Ann Mullins said it\u2019s interesting that issues like this are surfacing at the local level.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cThis is a really big move,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s really quite empowering at the local level to take control of this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Levin agreed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cI think the ramifications of doing this are powerful,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText Tagline\">csackariason@aspentimes.com<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/local\/city-to-ban-all-flavored-tobacco-nicotine-products-in-aspen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">via:: The Aspen Times<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cigarettes are available at nine retailers in Basalt.
