A two-day auction of George Michael<\/a>\u2019s art collection<\/a> earned over $15 million, which will be used toward the late singer\u2019s philanthropic efforts.<\/p>\n

During his lifetime, Michael amassed dozens of works by contemporary British artists \u2013 like Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin, Sarah Lucas, Michael Craig-Martin and Marc Quinn \u2013 who formed the Young British Art movement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThrough visits to galleries and artists\u2019 studios, [Michael] developed friendships with many of the YBA artists whose work he deeply admired,\u201d Christie\u2019s auction house in London said of Michael\u2019s collection<\/a>, which 12,000 people visitors viewed at a pre-auction exhibition.<\/p>\n

Two works by Damien Hirst from Michael\u2019s collection \u2013 The Incomplete Truth<\/a><\/em> and Saint Sebastian, Exquisite Pain<\/a><\/em> \u2013 alone sold for a combined $2.3 million. A Tracey Emin neon titled George Loves Kenny<\/a><\/em> received a high bid of $461,000.<\/p>\n

A pair of commissioned works also sold for six figures: Michael Craig-Martin\u2019s Commissioned Portrait Untitled (George)<\/em><\/a> \u2013 a wall-mounted LCD monitor\/computer with integrated software that displayed a color-changing portrait of the singer \u2013 sold for $231,000, a record for the artist, while Jim Lambie\u2019s Careless Whisper<\/a><\/em>, named after the Wham! song, $232,000, nearly 10 times its pre-auction estimate.<\/p>\n

An additional $332,000 from the sale of catalogues and limited edition tote bags will also go toward charity.<\/p>\n

\u201cPhilanthropic work was hugely important for George during his lifetime and it was his wish that this work would continue after his passing,\u201d Michael\u2019s trustees said following the auction.<\/p>\n
