\u201cWhat\u2019s your favorite thing about (skiing)?\u201d the stranger posed.<\/p>\n

Although likely intended as nothing more than friendly chatter \u2014 we were facing each other inside the confines of a bucket, after all, skiing being the only known and obvious common denominator \u2014 my reaction was as though he\u2019d asked me to recite a monologue from Hamlet or share my views on the meaning of life.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat a ridiculous question,\u201d I thought to myself. How is one supposed to reduce something she spends upward of 15 hours a week, six months out of the year, into one singular aspect?<\/p>\n

That particular morning was a powder day, so short of a better answer, I responded, \u201cpowder.\u201d<\/p>\n

After a chuckle followed by a semi-awkward silence, I expanded: \u201cIt\u2019s freeing and fun.\u201d<\/p>\n

(Fortunately, his next question didn\u2019t force me to admit I use words to form sentences for a living).<\/p>\n

While not a lie \u2014 skiing is liberating and fun and powder days are considered the pinnacle \u2014 I felt guilty for offering such a vapid, incomplete picture \u2014 like I hadn\u2019t done justice to skiing and its many forms.<\/p>\n

I realized then the many important roles that skiing serves, not only in my day-to-day life, but in my friends\u2019 lives, as well.<\/p>\n

Need some alone time in the fresh mountain air? Go skiing.<\/p>\n

Want to spend quality time with a friend? Go skiing.<\/p>\n

Feel like being social and hanging with friends? Go skiing.<\/p>\n

Want an awesome workout? Go skiing.<\/p>\n

Feel like escaping from the real world? Go skiing.<\/p>\n

Need to be productive? Schedule a gondola meeting \u2014 then go skiing.<\/p>\n

Skiing can be anything we want it to be and then some, be it a physical, therapeutic, creative, social or productive outlet. What other activities can satisfy and fulfill this many aspects of our lives?<\/p>\n

If money can\u2019t buy happiness, as they say, at least it can buy a ski pass.<\/p>\n
