The two artists trade off vocals about loving someone so much they\u2019d be OK with being someone\u2019s castoff. \u201cI\u2019ll be your castoff,\u201d they sing. \u201cI\u2019ll be your discarded toy\/Be your rejection foil.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The record, which also features contributions from yMusic, Blake Mills and Jack DeJohnette, among others, is due out April 12th.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[\u2018Cast-Off\u2019] is a song about acceptance and even gratitude in the face of rejection, egoless-ness, patience and humility,\u201d Hornsby said in a statement, via <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/news\/bon-ivers-justin-vernon-joins-bruce-hornsby-for-new-song-cast-off-listen\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Pitchfork<\/a>. \u201cThis song was put together in Eau Claire, WI last April, starting with an unused film cue, developed and expanded upon in the studio with spontaneous contributions from Sean Carey (who just walked in and started singing), Jeremy Ylvisaker (playing guitar that doesn\u2019t sound like guitar!), Mike Lewis and JT Bates on sax and drums, Brad Cook (and later Noisemaker JV Collier) on bass, and Justin and I taking turns in the vocal booth trading ideas and melodies. Pretty much, mostly concocted right there at April Base!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hornsby, whose biggest hit was 1986\u2019s piano-imbued \u201cThe Way It Is\u201d (which Tupac turned into \u201cChanges\u201d), received an indie-rock facelift a few years back when he appeared as a guest at a Bon Iver concert and also played with the National, Jenny Lewis, Will Oldham, Phosphorescent and others, during a Grateful Dead tribute. \u201cThey\u2019re not just copying me or sampling me,\u201d Hornsby told <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/inside-bruce-hornsbys-unlikely-indie-rock-resurgence-105804\/\">Rolling Stone<\/a><\/em> of the appreciation. \u201cI think they\u2019re channeling a certain aesthetic and finding their own way to express themselves within it. I\u2019ll take it!
