{"id":2442084,"date":"2019-03-24T12:37:41","date_gmt":"2019-03-24T18:37:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=812591"},"modified":"2019-03-24T12:37:41","modified_gmt":"2019-03-24T18:37:41","slug":"ethan-hawke-celebrates-both-album-release-of-ben-dickey-closing-of-true-west-on-broadway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kspn\/music-news\/ethan-hawke-celebrates-both-album-release-of-ben-dickey-closing-of-true-west-on-broadway\/","title":{"rendered":"Ethan Hawke Celebrates Both Album Release of Ben Dickey, Closing of \u2018True West\u2019 on Broadway"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span>\u201cWe wanted to celebrate the closing of<\/span> <em><span>True West<\/span><\/em> <span>with something beginning,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/ethan-hawke\/\" id=\"auto-tag_ethan-hawke\" data-tag=\"ethan-hawke\">Ethan Hawke<\/a> said Saturday night at a New York City party celebrating both the closing of Hawke and Paul Dano\u2019s performance of Sam Shepard\u2019s drama<\/span> <em><span>True West<\/span><\/em> <span>and the album release party of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-country\/blaze-ben-dickey-new-album-a-glimmer-on-the-outskirts-ethan-hawke-780704\/\">singer-songwriter Ben Dickey<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Dickey, a longtime friend of Hawke who came to prominence in his lead role in last year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/movies\/movie-features\/ben-dickey-blaze-profile-713214\/\">Hawke-directed biopic<\/a><\/span> <em><span>Blaze<\/span><\/em> <span>and is now signed to Hawke\u2019s label<\/span><span>, led his five-piece band at the \u201cDepartures and Arrivals\u201d-themed album release party through a blistering, 16-song, special-guests-filled set that mixed originals from his new album<\/span> <em><span>A Glimmer on the Outskirts<\/span><\/em> <span>with a slew of covers by everyone from the Rolling Stones and Nina Simone to Townes Van Zandt and Blaze Foley.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI feel lucky; I feel warm; I feel centered,\u201d Dickey, whose new second solo album hit stores two weeks ago, told<\/span> <em><span>Rolling Stone<\/span><\/em> <span>shortly before his set, which featured the album\u2019s producer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/charlie-sexton\/\" id=\"auto-tag_charlie-sexton\" data-tag=\"charlie-sexton\">Charlie Sexton<\/a>, on guitar alongside a slew of guests that included the Walkmen\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/hamilton-leithauser\/\" id=\"auto-tag_hamilton-leithauser\" data-tag=\"hamilton-leithauser\">Hamilton Leithauser<\/a> and Hawke\u2019s daughter Maya Ray Hawke.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Ethan Hawke introduced Dickey\u2019s performance with a touching personal speech that explained what he saw as the evening\u2019s cosmic connection between poetry, theater and music: \u201cWhether it was Hank Williams, Sam Shepard, John Malkovich or Steppenwolf, I wasn\u2019t sure what dream I was chasing, but I knew that whatever they did, that was it,\u201d Hawke said. Later, during his performance, Dickey told the story of being with Hawke in Canada in 2017 when they learned that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/movies\/movie-news\/sam-shepard-actor-and-playwright-dead-at-73-252958\/\">Shepard had died,<\/a> the events of which inspired Dickey\u2019s<\/span> <em><span>Glimmer<\/span><\/em> <span>highlight \u201cThe Man With the Hammer.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-812594 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/ben-dickey-ethan-hawke.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Ethan Hawke, Ben Dicke, Charlie Sexton\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\"><\/p>\n<p><span>Dickey\u2019s five-piece rock and roll outfit served as a consummate party band during their hour-plus set, which culminated with a thrilling three-song run with Leithauser, who covered Leonard Cohen\u2019s \u201cDon\u2019t Go Home With Your Hard-On,\u201d the Rolling Stones\u2019 \u201cCrazy Mama\u201d and LaVern Baker\u2019s \u201cSaved,\u201d before Dickey ended the evening with a rowdy rendition of Roger Miller\u2019s \u201cKing of the Road.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt\u2019s really good to have an excuse to party,\u201d Hawke told the crowd earlier in the evening, \u201cAnd it\u2019s very hard to say goodbye to a character. You spend years of your life warming up to try to really to do something with regards to stepping inside the shoes of another human being. It\u2019s a very bizarre and weird thing to do, and one of the hardest things to do is to let go of it.
