{"id":2442224,"date":"2019-03-28T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-03-28T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/?p=302615"},"modified":"2019-03-28T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2019-03-28T06:00:00","slug":"ready-set-action-aspen-films-28th-short-film-festival-kicks-off","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kspn\/local-news\/ready-set-action-aspen-films-28th-short-film-festival-kicks-off\/","title":{"rendered":"Ready, set, action: Aspen Film\u2019s 28th short-film festival kicks off"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"409\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/03\/shortsfest-atw-032819-2.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-post-image\" alt srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/03\/shortsfest-atw-032819-2.jpg 620w, https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/03\/shortsfest-atw-032819-2-300x198.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\"><figcaption><strong>&#8216;Appreciation&#8217;<\/strong><br \/><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"Special Sections-ATW-ATW_Body_Serif\">Aspen Film\u2019s 28th annual Shortsfest festival is coming to the Roaring Fork Valley next week, exploring unique themes in 69 short films from 26 countries spread out over 12 programs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Special Sections-ATW-ATW_Body_Serif\">Women directed more than 40 percent of the films, which will hit the screen in Aspen and Carbondale from April 2 to 7.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Special Sections-ATW-ATW_Body_Serif\">Culled from a record number of submissions \u2014 nearly 2,600 according to Aspen Film executive director Susan Wrubel \u2014 the shorts span documentary, animation, comedy and drama.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Special Sections-ATW-ATW_Body_Serif\"><a id=\"N0x167a4e0N0x1626b90:N0x167a4e0N0x18698e8\" href=\"https:\/\/aspenfilm.org\/aspen-shortsfest-2019\/shortsfest-2019-at-a-glance\/\">All of the films<\/a> are 40 minutes or less and are shown in an intimate setting in which attendees can meet guest filmmakers and industry experts in Q&amp;A forums, panel discussions and receptions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Special Sections-ATW-ATW_Body_Serif\">Shortsfest will screen a feature film \u2014 a rarity in festival history \u2014 with director Destin Cretton here for a special presentation of his 2013 film \u201cShort Term 12,\u201d adapted from his short film of the same name. Cretton was recently named director of the Marvel superhero movie \u201cShang-Chi.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Special Sections-ATW-ATW_Body_Serif\">Films will be screened at the Wheeler Opera House in Aspen and the Crystal Theatre in Carbondale. Tickets can be purchased at the Wheeler box office and aspenshowtix.com. Tickets for the Crystal Theatre also will be sold at Bonfire Coffee in Carbondale.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Special Sections-ATW-ATW_Body_Serif\">Here\u2019s a rundown of noteworthy titles to see each day of Shortsfest. Racial tensions are running high in the UK and Margaret Thatcher is in office.
