Khalid<\/a> reflects on death and reaches out for life guidance on his meditative new song \u201cSelf.\u201d<\/span> The minimal track opens with the singer crooning about his inner demons. \u201cIt\u2019s gettin\u2019 hard for me to breathe\/\u2019Cause the man that I\u2019ve been runnin\u2019 from is inside of me,\u201d he sings over chiming keys and a reverb-heavy snare-kick beat. \u201cI tell him, \u2018Keep it quiet,\u2019 so all he does is speak\/\u2019Cause he wants to keep his distance\/But it\u2019s hard for him to leave\/He knows I hear him cryin\u2019, cryin\u2019 out for help\/I don\u2019t know how to save him \u2014 I can\u2019t even save myself.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

A sense of optimism builds on the second verse. \u201cI\u2019ve been making changes, been workin\u2019 on my health,\u201d he sings. \u201cNo more competition \u2014 can\u2019t compete against myself.\u201d But he ends the section with vividly dark image: \u201cIf I die tomorrow and I\u2019m gone\/Let the blood run high \u2026 I\u2019ll be forever numb.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSelf\u201d appears on Khalid\u2019s upcoming second LP, Free Spirit<\/em><\/a>, out April 5th. The album, which follows his 2018 EP, Suncity<\/em>, also includes the previously issued cuts \u201cTalk,\u201d<\/a> \u201cMy Bad\u201d and \u201cBetter.\u201d<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Khalid will support Free Spirit<\/em> with a run of April TV spots: The Tonight Show<\/em> on the 4th, Good Morning America<\/em> on the 5th and the 54th Academy of Country Music Awards on the 7th. On April 3rd, the vocalist will premiere a companion film in theaters worldwide, accompanied by a full album listening event.<\/span><\/p>\n
