{"id":2442370,"date":"2019-03-31T16:16:00","date_gmt":"2019-03-31T22:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/blm-announces-prescribed-burn-plans-for-area-counties\/"},"modified":"2019-03-31T16:16:00","modified_gmt":"2019-03-31T22:16:00","slug":"blm-announces-prescribed-burn-plans-for-area-counties","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kspn\/local-news\/blm-announces-prescribed-burn-plans-for-area-counties\/","title":{"rendered":"BLM announces prescribed burn plans for area counties"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"411\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/03\/burn-atd-040119-1.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-post-image\" alt srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/03\/burn-atd-040119-1.jpg 620w, https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/03\/burn-atd-040119-1-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\"><\/figure>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Fire crews are preparing to conduct prescribed burns to mitigate fire risk in Garfield, Pitkin and Eagle counties, if weather and other conditions are favorable, the Bureau of Land Management announced Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Upper Colorado River Interagency Fire and Aviation Management Unit (UCR) will conduct the burns on public BLM and White River National Forest Lands in the coming months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Last year, crews completed 6,000 acres of prescribed burns across BLM and White River National Forest lands, including initial work on the Cattle Creek prescribed burn units, West Divide prescribed burn units and the Miller Creek prescribed burn.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cAs an interagency unit, we continue to collectively focus on areas where we can reduce fuel loading and improve wildlife habitat,\u201d Deputy White River Forest Supervisor Lisa Stoeffler said in a statement. \u201cPrescribed burning is a cost-effective and efficient way to target these areas for long-term benefits.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cPrescribed fires are an important tool land managers can use to create fuel breaks that can make fire suppression efforts more effective and reduce risk to firefighters and nearby communities,\u201d said Larry Sandoval, field manager for the BLM Colorado River Valley Field Office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cWe will only ignite these prescribed fires if conditions are conducive for safe, effective burns, as well as for good smoke dispersal away from nearby communities,\u201d UCR Fuels Specialist Lathan Johnson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Land managers conduct prescribed fires to improve habitat for big game and other native wildlife, and reduce fuels to lesson potential growth and severity of future wildfires. During a prescribed burn, low-intensity fire consumes overgrown fuels while promoting suckering and sprouting of nutrient-rich vegetation. This year\u2019s potential prescribed burn locations include:<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText Subhead\">Pitkin and Eagle county burn areas<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText ListBullet\">\u2022 Braderich Creek Prescribed Burn: 14 miles south\/southwest of Carbondale, 2.5 miles west of Redstone, up to 2,000 acres.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText ListBullet\">\u2022 Cattle Creek Prescribed Burn: 7 miles north of Basalt, northeast of Highway 82, up to 1,500 acres.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText ListBullet\">\u2022 Sheep Gulch Prescribed Burn: 4 miles northwest of Gypsum, up to 287 acres.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText Subhead\">Garfield County burn areas<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText ListBullet\">\u2022 Grizzly Creek Prescribed Burn: 1 mile northwest of the Grizzly Creek trailhead\/Interstate-70 in Glenwood Canyon, 521 acres.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText ListBullet\">\u2022 French Creek Prescribed Burn: 2.5 miles south and southeast of the Deep Creek Overlook north of Glenwood Canyon, up to 2,000 acres.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText ListBullet\">\u2022 Cherry Creek Prescribed Burn: 7 miles north of Silt, up to 1,154 acres.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText ListBullet\">\u2022 West Divide Prescribed Burn: 14 miles south of Silt, up to 727 acres.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/local\/blm-announces-prescribed-burn-plans-for-area-counties\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">via:: The Aspen Times<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fire crews are preparing to conduct prescribed burns to mitigate fire risk in Garfield, Pitkin and Eagle counties, if weather and other conditions are favorable, the Bureau of Land Management announced Friday.
