class=\"STND-STND BodyText DropCap\">The jam-band faithful came from Denver and Boulder and points east and west; they trudged and they danced in deep, slushy snow as they descended upon Buttermilk for The Apr\u00e8s. Aspen Skiing Co.\u2019s new music festival ran Friday through Sunday with destination performances by headliners <a id=\"N0x2755b20N0x2757730:N0x2755b20N0x28282b8\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/string-cheese-incident-returns-to-ski-town-roots-for-the-apres-in-aspen\/\">The String Cheese Incident<\/a> and <a id=\"N0x2755b20N0x2757790:N0x2755b20N0x2828348\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/entertainment\/umphreys-mcgee-opens-five-days-of-music-for-the-apres-in-aspen\/\">Umphrey\u2019s McGee<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Playing in typically temperamental spring weather \u2014 ranging from T-shirt warm afternoons to parka-cold nights with a few squalls of rain, sleet and snow \u2014 the bands drew attentive and jubilant crowds to the mountainside from its fervent local, regional and national fan bases, including many who\u2019d seen them dozens of times and regularly travel for performances.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Bill Finn of Denver said he\u2019d seen 140 Umphrey\u2019s shows before this weekend and about 90 by String Cheese. He came to the festival with a group of childhood friends from Chicago who\u2019ve since spread across Colorado and California and who regularly travel for Umphrey\u2019s tours. Among them was Amanda Eilers of Santa Cruz, California, who said seeing the bands in this unique mountain venue made The Apr\u00e8s a must.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cIt\u2019s cool to see them in a spot like this,\u201d she said. \u201cI feel like they let loose and they know it\u2019s special.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Others from the local contingent of hardcore fans said the affordability of The Apr\u00e8s was a relief.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cThis was priced for the locals and that feels good,\u201d said Kat Mahoney of Snowmass Village, attending her 52nd Umphrey\u2019s show Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">A $200 three-day ticket to the festival included two days of skiing Aspen\u2019s mountains, which also was a draw for the regional segment of the crowd.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cIt was a good deal,\u201d said Ryan Howell of Colorado Springs, who road-tripped with a group of friends and made his first trip to Aspen for The Apr\u00e8s. \u201cIt enticed us to drive five-and-a-half hours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Members of both bands also skied in the week leading up to the shows and took the stage in high spirits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cThis is f-ing crazy to be playing on a mountain right now,\u201d Umphrey\u2019s lead singer and guitarist Brendan Bayliss told the crowd on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">In the final show of its spring tour, Umphrey\u2019s McGee played a typically diverse two-hour set that wavered from psych rock to speed metal and noodling guitar jams, along with a dueling banjo-styled back-and-forth between Bayliss and guitarist Jake Cinninger on the tail end of \u201cHiggins.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The performance included an extended take on \u201cBad Friday\u201d that transitioned into a cover of The Police\u2019s \u201cWhen the World is Running Down, You Make the Best of What\u2019s Around\u201d and closed with the fan favorite \u201cHurt Bird Bath.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">On Saturday, String Cheese Incident hooked the crowd at the outset, playing \u201cTexas,\u201d a folksy road-trip tale from its first album that elicited a roar to the lyric \u201cIt was springtime in the mountains.\u201d True to form, String Cheese hopped between sit-down acoustic songs and improvisational electric passages, interspersed with a few EDM freak-out jams and an extended take on \u201cOne Step Closer.\u201d Playing two sets across about three hours, the band reached back to its earliest songs and showcased some of its newest \u2014 including the immigration-themed \u201cIllegal\u201d and the Beats Antique collaboration \u201cBhangra Saanj,\u201d both released this winter \u2014 and sing-along favorites like \u201cBarstool.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cThis is where we cut our teeth, playing ski areas and whatnot,\u201d String Cheese\u2019s Bill Nershi told the crowd, recalling their earliest days as an apr\u00e8s-ski act in Crested Butte. \u201cIt\u2019s good to be at the base of a mountain again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Skico has declined to release advance ticket sales numbers and weekend attendance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Held in a temporary open-air amphitheater on Panda Peak, the venue setup was similar to the X Games concerts there for the past four years. The crowds\u2019 sizes appeared comparable to the X Games concerts \u2014 which have tallied as many as 5,000 on the snowy bunny hill \u2014 except that it was filled with crunchier devotees of guitar-based music rather than the heavily caffeinated teens who throng the mountain for X Games\u2019 hip-hop and EDM stars.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The snowy terrain was difficult to navigate on foot. Soft and slushy snow that made for ideal spring skiing conditions over the weekend also made it challenging for concert-goers to keep their footing while navigating the sloped venue of The Apr\u00e8s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cFootwear choice is very important here,\u201d Lorenzo Semple, the Aspen Daily News columnist, observed Friday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">While most came with sturdy snowboots \u2014 and, of course, some wore ski and snowboard boots \u2014 many in the crowd came wearing slip-ons and sneakers (and at least one concert-goer came sockless in Birkenstocks).<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">This festive crowd did come prepared with costumes. Among the full-body furry suits on display included an avocado, a dinosaur and a chicken.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">A man who identified himself as \u201cFront Range Beaver\u201d was decked out in a full beaver suit with a \u201cHappy Birthday\u201d balloon floating up from the tail (he and a group of Denver area friends with Ikon ski passes came to The Apr\u00e8s to celebrate his 31st birthday).<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">While the crowds poured in for the headliners, the opening bands played to scant listeners \u2014 most notably during Southern Avenue\u2019s 4:30 p.m. performance on Saturday, which had little more than two dozen people lining the stage at the outset.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The festival was co-promoted by Belly Up Aspen, the downtown music club that hosted more intimate performances by Umphrey\u2019s on Wednesday and Thursday and one by String Cheese on Friday. The Buttermilk crowd was abuzz Friday with news that Jason Hann, percussionist for String Cheese, sat in with Umphrey\u2019s at Belly Up on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Skico has not committed to making The Apr\u00e8s an annual event. The festival was announced in late January and successfully <a id=\"N0x2755b20N0x27578b0:N0x2755b20N0x28290c8\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/local\/apres-music-festival-gives-april-bookings-a-boost\/\">boosted tourist bookings<\/a> during a lull between spring break and Easter weekend.
