{"id":2442643,"date":"2019-04-08T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-04-08T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/?p=303714"},"modified":"2019-04-08T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2019-04-08T06:00:00","slug":"aspens-housing-authority-going-on-pr-offensive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kspn\/local-news\/aspens-housing-authority-going-on-pr-offensive\/","title":{"rendered":"Aspen\u2019s housing authority going on PR offensive"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"413\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/04\/apchacomplaint-atd-030218-1.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-post-image\" alt srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/04\/apchacomplaint-atd-030218-1.jpg 620w, https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/04\/apchacomplaint-atd-030218-1-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\"><\/figure>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The Aspen-Pitkin County Housing Authority is developing a public relations and communication arm that\u2019s aimed at upping its profile in the community and better explaining how the program serves the public.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Fort Collins-based Slate Communications has been hired by APCHA as part of its <a id=\"N0x2457260N0x2406330:N0x2457260N0x24fd3f0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/trending\/aspens-affordable-housing-program-faces-budget-shortfall\/\">$1.4 million project<\/a> that will bring a program that manages 3,000 workforce-housing units into the 21st century.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Eight companies have answered APCHA\u2019s request for proposals to design and build what\u2019s being called the Housing Information Management System (HIMS).<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The opportunity to bid ended last Thursday. Proposals range in price from $89,000 to $1.5 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">HIMS is a digital collection and enterprise management system that will not only create a database of all the units in the APCHA inventory, it will provide real-time data for the public.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Currently, APCHA operates on a paper-based system and does not have a full account of all of its deed-restricted properties in the city and county.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">A selection committee will review the proposals and select a firm based on established criteria in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Kim Newcomer, founder and CEO of Slate Communications, was in Aspen last week meeting with over a dozen community members about the housing program.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">She also presented her communications plan to the APCHA board last Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cWe are here to support APCHA in supporting (HIMS),\u201d she told the board. \u201cIt\u2019s intrinsically connected to the whole system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Newcomer said Slate will do more than just help APCHA roll out HIMS, especially since the intergovernmental agency hasn\u2019t historically spent time, money or energy on public relations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cThis is a real opportunity to build an identity and explain what APCHA does for the public,\u201d she said. \u201cWe can build a comprehensive communications plan from scratch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">And there is a lot to build off of, Newcomer noted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">APCHA, funded by real estate and sales taxes, along with developer fees, was one of the <a id=\"N0x2457260N0x2406390:N0x2457260N0x24fdb40\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/local\/survey-says-aspens-affordable-housing-program-meets-residents-needs-issues-identified-in-aging-program\/\">first workforce housing agencies<\/a> in the country and the first in Colorado when it was established in the late 1970s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cYou were cool before it was cool,\u201d Newcomer told the board. \u201cBeing a progressive leader is a great foundation to work off of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">In the coming months, Slate will conduct an outreach plan that includes connecting with participants, citizens and elected officials to explain why HIMS is so crucial to the program\u2019s future, as well as how critical APCHA is for the health of the community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cWe need to explain to people what they really care about and how it affects them,\u201d Newcomer said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Board members said having a public relations firm and communications plan for APCHA is a long time coming.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cWow, this is some good stuff,\u201d said board member Rick Head after hearing Newcomer\u2019s presentation. \u201cIt\u2019s long overdue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Board member Dallas Blaney likened APCHA and the new information management system to the character in the film \u201cThe Curious Case of Benjamin Button,\u201d who was born elderly and grew young.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cWe\u2019re old, looking to be new,\u201d he said. \u201cIt makes us young again \u2026 nimble.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText Tagline\"><a href=\"mailto:csackariason@aspentimes.com\">csackariason@aspentimes.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/local\/aspens-housing-authority-going-on-pr-offensive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">via:: The Aspen Times<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Aspen-Pitkin County Housing Authority is developing a public relations and communication arm that\u2019s aimed at upping its profile in the community and better explaining how the program serves the public.
