Kids were able to sit up front and ask Shiffrin questions.<\/strong><br \/><em>Chris Dillmann | cdillmann@vaildaily.com<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText DropCap\">AVON \u2014 Mikaela Shiffrin got back into town over the weekend and was already meeting with fans on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">In what has become an annual celebration at The Westin Riverfront Resort &amp; Spa in Avon, Shiffrin was welcomed back by the community in Eagle County where she lives, meeting with fans and answering questions from local kids.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Lars Wible, a fourth-grader from Stone Creek Charter School, asked Shiffrin what is her favorite element of skiing and ski racing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Shiffrin\u2019s answer \u2014 that feeling of linking together good turns \u2014 resonated with Wible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cJust skiing in general is such a great sport,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Shiffrin said it\u2019s important for her to meet with fans when she returns back home from a successful season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cI remember the few times that I got to see my idols, even if they just skied by me getting on the chairlift,\u201d Shiffrin said on Sunday. \u201cBode Miller, getting on the chairlift, I freaked out, because he\u2019s my biggest idol, and I never even got to speak to him, so having a chance to meet somebody that you look up to and look them in the eyes and get a picture with them and feel that connection, it was important for me, so I\u2019m hoping that it\u2019s also important for the younger kids the same way that I always felt. And if that\u2019s enough to inspire them to keep shooting for the stars, keep reaching for their dreams, then that\u2019s huge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText Subhead\">\u2018BEING YOUR BEST\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Representatives from The Westin said they feel honored to have hosted welcome back celebrations for Shiffrin, who lives in Eagle-Vail, over the last few seasons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cEvery year the event grows,\u201d said Gaye Steinke with The Westin. \u201cWe had to move it to the ballroom this year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">More than 250 people were in attendance on Sunday, with adults and children waiting in line to get a picture with Shiffrin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cPeople look forward to it every year,\u201d Steinke said. \u201cShe just embodies good work ethic, health and wellness and being your best.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText Subhead\">RECORD SEASON<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Shiffrin\u2019s season was one for the record books. She became the first ski racer to win 17 World Cup events in a single season and also became the first skier to earn more than $1 million in race winnings alone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">She said her success this season surprised even her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cIf you told me that this season was gonna go that well at the beginning, I would say you\u2019re crazy,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Upon returning home, she\u2019s been on a whirlwind media tour, appearing on the Late Show with Jimmy Fallon, Good Morning America and other popular national programs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cI just want to push the limits of the sport,\u201d she told Rob Marciano with Good Morning America.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Shiffrin said the media attention has been surprising to see in a non-Olympic year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cIt shows that there\u2019s a lot of interest in ski racing and even more interest this year than I felt last year after the Olympics,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m really proud of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText Tagline\"><a href=\"mailto:jlaconte@vaildaily.com\">jlaconte@vaildaily.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/sports\/cause-for-celebration-shiffrin-returns-home-to-vail-after-record-season-on-the-ski-slopes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">via:: The Aspen Times<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chris Anthony mediates a question and answer with hometown ski super-start Mikaela Shiffrin Sunday at the Westin in Avon.
