{"id":2442809,"date":"2019-04-10T21:52:00","date_gmt":"2019-04-11T03:52:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/funeral-home-says-no-plans-to-move-amid-development-pressure\/"},"modified":"2019-04-10T21:52:00","modified_gmt":"2019-04-11T03:52:00","slug":"funeral-home-says-no-plans-to-move-amid-development-pressure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kspn\/local-news\/funeral-home-says-no-plans-to-move-amid-development-pressure\/","title":{"rendered":"Funeral home says no plans to move amid development pressure"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"429\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/04\/funeralhome-gpi-041119.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-post-image\" alt srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/04\/funeralhome-gpi-041119.jpg 620w, https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/04\/funeralhome-gpi-041119-300x208.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\"><figcaption><strong>Farnum Holt Funeral Home is located at 405 West Seventh Street near the confluence of the Roaring Fork and Colorado Rivers.<\/strong><br \/><em>Chelsea Self \/ Post Independent<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">As the city of Glenwood Springs continues its confluence development conversations, Farnum Holt Funeral Home, which sits along the Roaring Fork River, has no intentions of selling or relocating, owner Trey Holt said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">On April 8, engineers, architects, consultants and members of the public filled the City Hall council chambers for a pre-bid meeting to brief potential confluence area \u201cmaster developers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The city\u2019s request for qualifications (RFQ) for the project, which was published Feb. 22 and will close May 22, seeks \u201cto find a qualified, visionary development partner \u2026 to develop approximately 12.2 acres of land located at the confluence of the Colorado and Roaring Fork rivers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The RFQ additionally specified that its intent was to \u201cidentify a master developer partner with whom the city could enter into a collaborative public\/private partnership to develop creative and innovative approaches to this property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Holt has lived in Glenwood Springs since 1986 and has owned the family business, Farnum Holt Funeral Home at 405 W. Seventh St., since 1990. He said the latest confluence development talk was nothing new.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cIt\u2019s always been, \u2018Well, what are you going to do?\u2019\u201d Holt said of the question he has been asked over the past 30 years concerning the prospect of redeveloping the confluence area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cWell, we are kind of doing what we\u2019ve been doing,\u201d Holt said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cI have seen so many drawings,\u201d Holt said regarding potential plans he had been shown over the past three decades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Holt said he did meet with Glenwood Springs City Manager Debra Figueroa and Assistant City Manager Jennifer Ooton on two separate, brief and informal occasions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cThey wanted to know what my plans were,\u201d Holt said of the short meetings. \u201cWell, my plans were to just run our business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The RFQ does not include the funeral home property, but does feature potential development sites around it \u2014 predominantly the city-owned properties west of City Hall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The plans include potential development for the approximate 3-acre Vogelaar Park, located on the southwest corner of Eighth and School streets, as well as the land that previously housed the city\u2019s wastewater treatment plant between 1968 and 2012, and the parking areas near City Hall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">According to the RFQ\u2019s objectives, through a public\/private partnership the city aims for these parcels of land to possibly include:<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText ListBullet\">\u2022 A variety of housing types (mixed-income housing)<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText ListBullet\">\u2022 Commercial space \u2014 including areas for restaurants and other retail space<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText ListBullet\">\u2022 Office and incubator space<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText ListBullet\">\u2022 Hotel\/lodging<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText ListBullet\">\u2022 Civic and public space, which could include space for performing arts\/special events\/museum<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText ListBullet\">\u2022 Retained access to the Rio Grande Trail<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText ListBullet\">\u2022 Public river access<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText ListBullet\">\u2022 Transit access<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Despite all of those possible ideas, Holt said he wanted to make sure that Farnum Holt Funeral Home\u2019s columbarium, a place where cremated remains may be kept by families, remained intact.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201c(The columbarium) sits on our property by the bike path,\u201d Holt said. \u201cThat\u2019s a concern, that the integrity of that remains, absolutely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Holt said after all the years, he never had an opinion as to what should go into the adjacent confluence area, but just hoped that it was in the best interests of Glenwood Springs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cYou only get one chance, and it has to be good for the community,\u201d Holt said. \u201c(The confluence) is so beautiful and so nice.
