{"id":2442914,"date":"2019-04-12T21:36:00","date_gmt":"2019-04-13T03:36:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/glenwoods-american-furniture-warehouse-closing\/"},"modified":"2019-04-12T21:36:00","modified_gmt":"2019-04-13T03:36:00","slug":"glenwoods-american-furniture-warehouse-closing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kspn\/local-news\/glenwoods-american-furniture-warehouse-closing\/","title":{"rendered":"Glenwood\u2019s American Furniture Warehouse closing"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"393\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/04\/warehouseclosure-gpi-041319.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-post-image\" alt srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/04\/warehouseclosure-gpi-041319.jpg 620w, https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/04\/warehouseclosure-gpi-041319-300x190.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\"><figcaption><strong>American Furniture Warehouse located in South Glenwood near Walmart is set to close in roughly six weeks.<\/strong><br \/><em>Chelsea Self \/ Post Independent<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">After 25 years in operation, American Furniture Warehouse\u2019s Glenwood Springs location will permanently close in approximately six weeks, company CEO Jake Jabs told the Post Independent on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cIt\u2019s basically been an underperforming store for us,\u201d Jabs said. \u201cWe are opening stores in Houston and Arizona and places like that and so as a business person we are looking at stores that make money.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cThat store really hasn\u2019t been making any money for us,\u201d he said of the Glenwood location.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Jabs explained that the company had done everything it could to keep the local store in business, but ultimately decided to sell the building and will shut down in roughly six weeks following a 10 percent off sale.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cI have (a) soft spot in my heart for Glenwood and that store,\u201d Jabs said. \u201cI love Glenwood and it\u2019s a great market, but basically it\u2019s just underperforming and I think we\u2019ve done everything we could do to crack that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">According to Jabs, American Furniture\u2019s Glenwood location employs roughly 20 people, all of whom were notified. Those employees have the option of remaining with the company, he said, but would need to move to a different store.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cThere will be no layoffs. We can transfer them to either Grand Junction or \u2026 we have 12 stores here on the Front Range we can put them with, too,\u201d Jabs said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cI think that is probably one reason that the store in Glenwood hasn\u2019t done as well, because of our nice store is in Grand Junction,\u201d Jabs added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Jabs would not disclose who the building, located at 3200 S Glen Ave. in the Roaring Fork Marketplace, sold to, as \u201ccaveats\u201d were still being worked out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cWe do have to be out,\u201d Jabs explained of the forthcoming deadline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Jabs said that Glenwood\u2019s American Furniture Warehouse was one of the first stores he opened with the company.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cI am sad to see a long-standing business leave the area,\u201d Glenwood Springs Chamber Resort Association President and CEO Angie Anderson said Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">According to Anderson, American Furniture Warehouse also was a long-standing member with the Chamber Resort Association. \u201cWe are sad to see them go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The news of American Furniture Warehouse closing its Glenwood location comes not long after Safeway announced that it, too, would be leaving the Glenwood Springs market.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">American Furniture Warehouse was founded in 1975 by Jabs after he bought American Furniture Company in Denver.
