Let\u2019s get a few things out of the way about \u201cPower is Power,\u201d the first single from the Game of Thrones<\/em><\/a> soundtrack, For the Throne<\/em><\/a>. The Weeknd<\/a> doesn\u2019t compare Daenerys Targaryen\u2019s hair to cocaine. Travis Scott<\/a> avoids saying \u201cit\u2019s lit\u201d after a punchline about dragons. SZA<\/a> is, well\u2026 SZA.<\/p>\n

The secret power of \u201cPower is Power\u201d is the lengths each artist goes to avoid their usual musical tendencies. What if you had three of the most popular artists in the world avoid what made them popular, and let them sing about the magical fantasy realm depicted in the A Song of Ice and Fire<\/em> series? It\u2019s an unquestionably bad idea, but the resulting is an unlikely potential hit, a so-bad-it\u2019s-good kind of masterpiece.<\/p>\n

Operatic, melodramatic and pulsating, \u201cPower is Power\u201d is one long spoiler alert for those that haven\u2019t been watching the adventures of Jon Snow to date. The song tracks the death (\u201cThe knife in my heart couldn\u2019t slow me down\u201d) and resurrection (\u201cI rise from my scars, nothing hurts me now\u2019) of everyone\u2019s favorite former bastard turned rightful heir to the Iron Throne.<\/p>\n

By the end of the three minute and thirty second track, each artist makes a convincing case that Jon Snow aka Lord Commander of the Night\u2019s Watch aka Warden in the North aka King of the North aka Aegon Targaryen is the unstoppable force destined to win out at the conclusion of the series. The Weeknd calls Jon \u201cthe one,\u201d while mentioning the throne is indeed heavy. Travis Scott throws a wrench in the Jon prediction when he mentions the crown would never be too heavy for a queen. The sentiment makes sense considering \u201cpower is power,\u201d is an infamous quote<\/a> from Cersei Lannister (the current rule of Westeros). Then again Travis also raps \u201cAin\u2019t no knife, dagger, bullet that can do it,\u201d before ad-libbing bullet sounds \u2014 it\u2019s possible he\u2019s watching a completely different show than the rest of us.<\/p>\n

For the Throne<\/em> will be released on April 26th.<\/p>\n
