{"id":2443415,"date":"2019-04-25T08:01:29","date_gmt":"2019-04-25T14:01:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=826816"},"modified":"2019-04-25T08:01:29","modified_gmt":"2019-04-25T14:01:29","slug":"flashback-kenny-chesney-covers-bruce-springsteens-one-step-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kspn\/music-news\/flashback-kenny-chesney-covers-bruce-springsteens-one-step-up\/","title":{"rendered":"Flashback: Kenny Chesney Covers Bruce Springsteen\u2019s \u2018One Step Up\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/kenny-chesney-bruce-cover.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>The news came out this morning that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/bruce-springsteen\/\" id=\"auto-tag_bruce-springsteen\" data-tag=\"bruce-springsteen\">Bruce Springsteen<\/a>\u2019s long-awaited new solo disc is called <em>Western Stars<\/em>, and it draws heavy inspiration from the California pop scene of the Seventies, specifically artists like Glen Campbell and Burt Bacharach. \u201cI don\u2019t know if people will hear those influences,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2018\/music\/news\/bruce-springsteen-talks-trump-new-album-and-hints-at-an-upcoming-tour-1203078221\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">he told <em>Variety<\/em> in December.<\/a> \u201cBut that was what I had in my mind. It gave me something to hook an album around; it gave me some inspiration to write.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a big difference between Glen Campbell\u2013like pop songs and country music, but Springsteen has also compared the upcoming album to <em>Tunnel of Love<\/em> and <em>Devils and Dust.<\/em> If you take some of those songs and add a banjo, pedal steel or a bit of twang, you\u2019d have something not far from country music. And there\u2019s a long history of country artists drawing inspiration from Bruce Springsteen songs and even covering them. Here\u2019s a recording of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/kenny-chesney\/\" id=\"auto-tag_kenny-chesney\" data-tag=\"kenny-chesney\">Kenny Chesney<\/a> playing \u201cOne Step Up\u201d at Asbury Park\u2019s Stone Pony in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI actually put this song on my <em>No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems<\/em> album in 2002,\u201d he told the crowd, \u201cand got an amazing letter from my friend here in Asbury Park. It was one of the highlights of my life, just so you know. Because of that I\u2019ve decided to do this song, so bear with me. It\u2019s been a while.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was just one of two times he\u2019s done the song in concert.
