In the fall of 2016, he\u2019d been diagnosed with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/charles-bradley-diagnosed-with-stomach-cancer-104675\/\">stomach cancer<\/a>, forcing him to cancel a North American tour in support of his third album, <em>Changes<\/em>. Weak, but resilient, Bradley entered the recording booth and began to record the vocals for a new song, \u201cLonely As You Are,\u201d on the spot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The resulting track is a heart-rending ballad that deftly mixes Bradley\u2019s powerhouse vocals with country-tinged soul groove. \u201cNo one can chain me, if it call for me to die,\u201d Bradley belts, \u201cI\u2019m so lonely, lonely as hell.\u201d The song closes with Bradley delivering a poignant message to his mother, grandmother and other loved ones, \u201cOne day, when God says well done, please be at the gate, waiting for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cCharles knew \u2018Lonely as You Are\u2019 could comfort people and help them find a way to deal with their own loneliness,\u201d said Bradley\u2019s former co-manager, Morton Lorge. \u201cHe was always looking for ways to make people feel better, even when he was confronting his own pain and suffering. He asked that \u2018Lonely\u2019 be played at his funeral; he wanted to share it with the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Bradley recorded \u201cLonely As You Are\u201d as part of a session with New York-based musician and producer, James Levy. Multi-instrumentalist Paul Defiglia helped complete the track, tapping the Avett Brothers\u2019 Seth Avett and Mike Marsh to provide acoustic guitar and drums, respectively.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cLonely As You Are\u201d is the first of two songs from Bradley\u2019s sessions with Levy, with the other, \u201cLucifer,\u201d set to arrive May 31st.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/charles-bradley-acclaimed-soul-singer-dead-at-68-201609\/\">Bradley died<\/a> September 2017 after a battle with stomach and liver cancer at the age of 68.
