In the latest episode of Spotify\u2019s Under Cover podcast<\/a>, Hozier<\/a> professed his love for Destiny\u2019s Child. \u201cIf you have been living under a rock, under a fossil, under a cavern, under just some long-forgotten lava pool under the earth, if you\u2019ve never heard it before, \u2018Say My Name\u2019 by Destiny\u2019s Child is a rhythmically pleasing, melodically pleasing, magnificently vocally performed R&B track. It\u2019s a fantastic pop song, and will live forever.\u201d<\/p>\n

But he didn\u2019t always feel that way. The Irish singer-songwriter spent his early youth listening to jazz and soul, so when \u201cSay My Name\u201d was released in 1999, he didn\u2019t fully absorb it. \u201cIn a way, a lot of that stuff went over my head \u2026 It took me years to realize just how outrageously talented Beyonc\u00e9 really is and was as well back then as such a young artist.\u201d<\/p>\n

During the episode, Hozier gushed over the arrangement and production of \u201cSay My Name,\u201d including the song\u2019s intricate strings. \u201cIt was nice to do this, because it was trying to redeem the 12-year-old kid who didn\u2019t appreciate that for just what it was,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

In order to cover \u201cSay My Name,\u201d Hozier wanted to give the song \u201cA Levon Helm and the Band sort of tight but kind of country solo groove,\u201d completely changing the key and tempo. Because the song is lyrically heavy, Hozier felt he had to slow the song down. \u201cThere was no chance of me being able to hammer out those lines,\u201d he said. \u201cIt is a machine gun of a pre-chorus.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe hardest part about any cover I think is that hard question you have to ask yourself,\u201d Hozier said, \u201cIs, was it worth while? This was really, really fun to do and I enjoyed it, and hopefully, it was worth while.\u201d<\/p>\n
