{"id":2443908,"date":"2019-05-08T02:21:20","date_gmt":"2019-05-08T08:21:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=832727"},"modified":"2019-05-08T02:21:20","modified_gmt":"2019-05-08T08:21:20","slug":"hear-phantom-planets-groovy-new-song-balisong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kspn\/music-news\/hear-phantom-planets-groovy-new-song-balisong\/","title":{"rendered":"Hear Phantom Planet\u2019s Groovy New Song \u2018Balisong\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/phantom-planet-2019-cr-Travis-Schneider-billboard-1548-1557242306-compressed.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s been over a decade since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/phantom-planet\/\" id=\"auto-tag_phantom-planet\" data-tag=\"phantom-planet\">Phantom Planet<\/a> released new music and the California group is back with a new single, \u201cBalisong.\u201d The mid-tempo indie rock song comes off the band\u2019s upcoming new album, which doesn\u2019t have a release date as of yet.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9SHtp1LtTi8?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Frontman Alex Greenwald <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/articles\/columns\/rock\/8510189\/phantom-planet-balisong-new-album\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">told <em>Billboard<\/em><\/a> the band is \u201c50 to 75 percent\u201d finished with the new album, which the musicians started working on after a surprise show in LA in January. \u201cIt\u2019s exciting and it is a bit unexpected \u2014 especially just how quickly this snowballed,\u201d Greenwald said. \u201cIt\u2019s cool people remember us and want to hear more from us. I have friends who when I brought up that we were gonna make a record they were like, \u2018Oh! F***in\u2019 finally!\u2019 They didn\u2019t want to bring it up before, but obviously they were hoping for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Greenwald also explained that \u201cBalisong\u201d specifically comes from his obsession with a butterfly knife. \u201cIt\u2019s something that is really easily concealed but with the right know-how can be easily pulled out and is sharp as hell,\u201d he said. \u201cI just went down the rabbit hole with that and the band loved the song and it was one of the first ones we did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Phantom Planet\u2019s last release came in 2008, when the band dropped album <em>Raise The Dead.&nbsp;<\/em>They are scheduled to perform at Tulsa\u2019s Hanson\u2019s Hop Jam Festival on May 19 and will likely book more shows soon, according to Greenwald. He told <em>Billboard<\/em>, \u201cWe\u2019ve surprised ourselves with how easy and how much fun and exciting it is to play together, still.
