He was joined at every stop by an orchestra in order to recreate the lush arrangements of the original album. They taped the set in Budapest and Bethel Woods, New York (the site of the original Woodstock) for the live album <em>The Who\u2019s Tommy Orchestral,<\/em> which is coming out on June 14th.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPete\u2019s music is particularly suited to being embellished by the sounds that an orchestra can add to the band,\u201d Daltrey said in a statement. \u201cTommy can mean whatever you want it to mean, I use the characters in it as metaphors for parts of the human condition, so it\u2019s a kind of a story of the human spirit. Even though it is 50 years on, I approach it as though I\u2019m singing it for the first time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>The Who\u2019s Tommy Orchestral<\/em> features all 24 songs from the album, including ones like \u201cSensation\u201d and \u201cWelcome\u201d that the Who rarely played onstage during their many <em>Tommy<\/em> concerts over the years. \u201cWe stay faithful to the record,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/roger-daltrey-talks-symphonic-tommy-tour-the-whos-future-630021\/\">Daltrey told <em>Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a> shortly before the tour began. \u201cWe treat it with the respect that you\u2019d treat a Mozart opera.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This new orchestra version of <em>Tommy<\/em> is coming out just a few weeks after the 50th anniversary of the album\u2019s original release back in 1969. The Who recently began a new tour where they\u2019re playing with local orchestras, but they\u2019re only doing a small sampling of songs from <em>Tommy.<\/em> \u201cI have real trouble with <em>Tommy,<\/em>\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/pete-townshend\/\" id=\"auto-tag_pete-townshend\" data-tag=\"pete-townshend\">Pete Townshend<\/a> told <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> earlier this year. \u201cWe did it recently at The Royal Albert Hall for the Teenage Cancer shows. And I sort of had a bit of a breakdown halfway through it. I get very triggered by it.
