{"id":2444121,"date":"2019-05-13T09:02:37","date_gmt":"2019-05-13T15:02:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=834572"},"modified":"2019-05-13T09:02:37","modified_gmt":"2019-05-13T15:02:37","slug":"hear-reggae-great-big-youths-rendition-of-bo-diddleys-gunslinger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kspn\/music-news\/hear-reggae-great-big-youths-rendition-of-bo-diddleys-gunslinger\/","title":{"rendered":"Hear Reggae Great Big Youth\u2019s Rendition of Bo Diddley\u2019s \u2018Gunslinger\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_1432.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/reggae\/\" id=\"auto-tag_reggae\" data-tag=\"reggae\">Reggae<\/a> great Big Youth makes a rare return to the mic for a rendition of Bo Diddley\u2019s \u201cGunslinger\u201d on the latest cut off the upcoming <em>Red, Gold, Green &amp; Blue<\/em> compilation, the first release from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/zak-starkey\/\" id=\"auto-tag_zak-starkey\" data-tag=\"zak-starkey\">Zak Starkey<\/a>\u2019s Trojan Jamaica label.<\/p>\n<p>On \u201cGunslinger,\u201d Big Youth, the deejay and toastmaster responsible for Seventies classics like <em>Dreadlocks Dread<\/em> and <em>Natty Cultural Dread<\/em>, teams with the renowned Sly &amp; Robbie, Studio One guitar great Ernest Ranglin and producer Youth for their version of Rob Jevons\u2019 Morricone-esque&nbsp;remix of the Diddley song.<\/p>\n<p>As Starkey, the son of Ringo Starr and drummer for the Who, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/zak-starkey-black-uhuru-trojan-jamaica-812956\/\">recently told <em>Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a>, the Trojan Jamaica was born after the drummer and his Sshh bandmate Sharna \u201cSshh\u201d Liguz teamed with Eddie Vedder and a slew of reggae legends to record a cover of Bob Marley\u2019s \u201cGet Up Stand Up.\u201d The rendition earned Starkey and Liguz an invitation to perform at the Peter Tosh Museum and, ultimately, the pair decided to launch a record label.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe felt so warmly welcomed and at home in the musical community that we stayed and recorded all the music that has become Trojan Jamaica,\u201d Starkey said. \u201cWe\u2019re committed to presenting local artists together with international musicians who, like us, have been inspired by roots culture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trojan Jamaica previously shared Mykal Rose\u2019s (Black Uhuru) cover of Screamin\u2019 Jay Hawkins\u2019 1956 cut, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/zak-starkey-black-uhuru-trojan-jamaica-812956\/\">I Put a Spell On You<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe took our favorite blues lyrics to Jamaica and matched them to the voices we thought would fit the song and the song\u2019s message, then presented each singer with two or three choices which were all accepted and worked up in the studio,\u201d Starkey added.<\/p>\n<p>The 13-song <em>Red, Gold, Green &amp; Blue<\/em>, out this summer and available to <a href=\"http:\/\/smarturl.it\/RGGB\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">preorder<\/a> now, features songs by reggae legends like Toots &amp; The Maytals, Freddie McGregor, Phylea Carley, Kiddus I, Andrew Tosh and more putting their spin on tracks by artists like Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Willie Dixon, Howlin\u2019 Wolf, Robert Johnson and Johnny &amp; Shuggie Otis.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/big-youth-gunslinger-trojan-jamaica-834572\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">via:: Rolling Stone<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reggae great Big Youth makes a rare return to the mic for a rendition of Bo Diddley\u2019s \u201cGunslinger\u201d on the latest cut off the upcoming Red, Gold, Green &amp; Blue compilation, the first release from Zak Starkey\u2019s Trojan Jamaica label.
