Hours after the Alabama State Senate passed a measure that would ban abortion<\/a> almost entirely in the state, Lady Gaga<\/a> labeled the decision a \u201ctravesty\u201d in a pointed tweet.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt is an outrage to ban abortion<\/a> in Alabama, period, and all the more heinous that it excludes those who have been raped or are experiencing incest, non-consensual or not,\u201d she wrote. \u201cSo there\u2019s a higher penalty for doctors who perform these operations than for most rapists? This is a travesty, and I pray for all these women and young girls who suffer at the hands of this system.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Introducing the statement, the singer wrote, \u201cI love you, Alabama. Prayers to all women and young girls,\u201d adding the hashtags #AlabamaAbortionBan, #Alabama, #AlabamaSenate, #NoUterusNoOpinion, #PlannedParenthood and #ProChoice.<\/span><\/p>\n

The measure<\/a>, which passed the Republican-controlled state legislature on Tuesday after moving through the House in April, would ban abortion outright \u2014 except when the mother\u2019s life is in jeopardy, for ectopic pregnancies and if the \u201cunborn child has a lethal anomaly\u201d \u2014 and potentially punish doctors who perform them with life in prison. Though Governor Kay Ivey has yet to publicly commit, she is expected to sign the legislation, potentially fueling debate for the Supreme Court overturning the Roe v. Wade ruling of 1973.<\/span><\/p>\n

Numerous other celebrities have tweeted criticisms of the news, including Chris Evans<\/a> (\u201cIf you\u2019re not worried about Roe v Wade, you\u2019re not paying attention.\u201d), Jane Lynch<\/a> (\u201cTHE GOAL IS TO CONTROL WOMEN\u201d) and Patton Oswalt<\/a>, who called it \u201chorrifying\u201d and \u201csheer evil.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
