He was 29.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">While vacationing in Mexico last week, Coffey suffered a stroke and spent the next few days going in and out of a coma, longtime friend and Aspen Olympian Wiley Maple wrote in a text message Monday night. Coffey suffered additional strokes during that time and passed away Monday morning, Maple said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Coffey was a 2008 graduate of Aspen High School and was part of the Aspen Valley Ski and Snowboard Club. He went on to become an <a id=\"N0x25a0010N0x25497e0:N0x25a0010N0x26a7ba8\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/sports\/aspen-graduate-makes-podium-at-ncaa-ski-championships\/\">All-American ski racer at the University of New Hampshire<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">He was <a id=\"N0x25a0010N0x2549840:N0x25a0010N0x26a7cc8\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/weekly\/aspen-times-weekly-ski-gangs-the-next-generation\/\">part of the Aspen \u201cski gang\u201d<\/a> that called itself \u201cThe Freaks,\u201d which he co-founded alongside childhood friends Baker Boyd and Maple.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Maple, a current World Cup ski racer and 2018 Olympian, had been with Coffey in Mexico only a few days before the incident. Maple had returned to school before Coffey went to the hospital. Coffey served as Maple\u2019s ski technician for the 2018-19 ski season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cWe were having a blast surfing and just living that slow, Mexican life,\u201d Maple wrote via text Monday night. \u201cFrom what I understand he just woke up one morning not feeling well \u2014 took a nap then started his stretching warm-up for a surf session and collapsed. They rushed him to the hospital and thought the worst was over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Boyd was among those with him at the time of the incident, Maple said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Maple <a id=\"N0x25a0010N0x25498a0:N0x25a0010N0x26a7f98\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/stories\/wcmaple\/\">posted video clips on Instagram<\/a> on Monday in honor of his friend. One was of him uphilling in a pair of skis he said belonged to Coffey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cLucky enough to have a pair of Sam\u2019s skis with me,\u201d Maple wrote on his post. \u201cThought I should stop crying and start skiing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Coffey was well-known in the ski industry, both through his work in public relations and through his skills on snow. Many more individuals and organization took to social media on Monday to acknowledge his passing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cWe are incredibly saddened to hear our friend, Sam Coffey, has passed away,\u201d the World Pro Ski Tour wrote on Instagram. \u201cSam\u2019s indomitable spirit, and world class skiing will live on forever.
