{"id":2444421,"date":"2019-05-20T23:04:00","date_gmt":"2019-05-21T05:04:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/aspen-city-council-passes-partial-flavored-nicotine-ban\/"},"modified":"2019-05-20T23:04:00","modified_gmt":"2019-05-21T05:04:00","slug":"aspen-city-council-passes-partial-flavored-nicotine-ban","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kspn\/local-news\/aspen-city-council-passes-partial-flavored-nicotine-ban\/","title":{"rendered":"Aspen City Council passes partial flavored nicotine ban"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"413\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/05\/wireColoradoNicotine-gpi-042519.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-post-image\" alt srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/05\/wireColoradoNicotine-gpi-042519.jpg 620w, https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/05\/wireColoradoNicotine-gpi-042519-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\"><\/figure>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Aspen City Council on Monday passed a ban on flavored electronic smoking devices, stopping short of a full prohibition of flavored tobacco products for failure of having a majority vote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Deadlocked 2-2, with Councilwoman Ann Mullins absent, an <a id=\"N0x1611aa0N0x16189c0:N0x1611aa0N0x1672d60\" href=\"https:\/\/d3n9y02raazwpg.cloudfront.net\/cityofaspen\/38a9cb2a-2a35-11e9-b021-0050569183fa-c00eeb57-b7db-4763-8c17-174415a9ced9-1558047031.pdf\">ordinance<\/a> banning all flavored tobacco products within city limits failed to pass.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">An alternate ordinance introducing a <a id=\"N0x1611aa0N0x1618a20:N0x1611aa0N0x1672e80\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/local\/aspens-electeds-reconsider-full-flavored-nicotine-ban\/\">partial ban<\/a> singling out just flavored vape and e-cigarette products received full support from council with the understanding that it will come back June 10 for reconsideration to a full prohibition of both tobacco and electronic products.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Mayor Steve Skadron and Councilman Ward Hauenstein are in favor of the full ban and expect Mullins to vote the same, based on her previous comments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Passing a full ban on flavored electronic and tobacco products will make Aspen one of a handful of cities in the country to do so, which sends a message of leadership in public health and safety.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cI like standing up and saying \u2018no\u2019 to the tobacco industry,\u201d Skadron said, adding that if taking products that advertise to <a id=\"N0x1611aa0N0x1618a80:N0x1611aa0N0x16730c0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tobaccofreekids.org\/assets\/factsheets\/0398.pdf\">impressionable youth<\/a> off the market helps save future generations, then so be it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Hauenstein said it\u2019s difficult to weigh such a complex issue, but in the end, a full ban is what\u2019s best for the youth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cSomeone has to have to the political will to take a stand \u2026 it\u2019s the greatest good for the community,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Councilman Bert Myrin said he has a hard time squaring why an individual over 21 years old can\u2019t make their own decisions as long as it doesn\u2019t harm others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Councilman Adam Frisch said the conversation two years ago among elected officials centered around how to protect area youth, which yielded a change in the legal age to buy tobacco products from 18 to 21, as well as a $3 additional tax on nicotine sales.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Going for a full flavored ban, including tobacco, is not much different than starting to regulate alcohol products, Frisch noted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Several public health officials and youth advocates spoke in front of council in favor of the full ban because it offers a stronger model for other communities to implement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">June 10 is the last meeting for the current council. A new one will be sworn in.
