Spanish-English singer Mabel<\/a> made her U.S. television debut on Tuesday night, performing her single \u201cDon\u2019t Call Me Up\u201d on The Tonight Show<\/a> Starring Jimmy Fallon<\/a><\/em>. She and a quartet of backing dancers performed the kiss-off track on a sparse stage, letting the lyrics and song\u2019s message take the forefront.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I\u2019m underneath the bright lights\/When I\u2019m tryna have a good time\/\u2019Cause I\u2019m good now you ain\u2019t mine\/Now, now, now, now, don\u2019t call me up,\u201d she sang, letting the spotlights prove her point.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t Call Me Up,\u201d previously featured on Mabel\u2019s debut mixtape Ivy to Roses<\/em>, will appear on her upcoming debut album High Expectations<\/em>, out August 2nd. In an April interview with Billboard<\/em><\/a>, she spoke about growing up in a musical family (her mother is Swedish singer Neneh Cherry<\/a>, and her father is British producer Cameron McVey, who\u2019s worked with Massive Attack<\/a> and Portishead<\/a>), as well as learning to blend her mixed roots in her own work.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it was just about being really proud of my heritage,\u201d she said. \u201cLike when the Afrobeats fell into place for me, that\u2019s a massive part of who I am. They made the record that launched my career back home, [U.K. top ten hit] \u2018Finders Keepers,\u2019 and I was kind of afraid of my identity before\u2026 I think from being a teenager up until about sort of now has all just been about figuring it out, and just learning to be really proud.\u201d<\/p>\n
