{"id":2444493,"date":"2019-05-22T10:53:48","date_gmt":"2019-05-22T16:53:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=838744"},"modified":"2019-05-22T10:53:48","modified_gmt":"2019-05-22T16:53:48","slug":"leonard-cohen-reflects-on-love-in-new-documentary-trailer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kspn\/music-news\/leonard-cohen-reflects-on-love-in-new-documentary-trailer\/","title":{"rendered":"Leonard Cohen Reflects on Love in New Documentary Trailer"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/leonard-cohen-doc-trailer.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The ghostly voice of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/leonard-cohen\/\" id=\"auto-tag_leonard-cohen\" data-tag=\"leonard-cohen\">Leonard Cohen<\/a> reflects on love in the trailer for <em>Marianne &amp; Leonard: Words of Love<\/em>, a new documentary about the singer-songwriter\u2019s decades-long relationship with muse Marianne Ihlen, who inspired Cohen classics like \u201cSo Long, Marianne.\u201d \u201cWhen trying to learn some things about love,\u201d the late Cohen intones, \u201cwhen your woman becomes her own content, and you become her content, that\u2019s love.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The poetic clip opens with a news report of Ihlen\u2019s death in July 2016, followed by narration from part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/leonard-cohen-penned-letter-to-so-long-marianne-muse-before-her-death-101175\/\">a Cohen \u201clove letter\u201d<\/a>: \u201cDearest Marianne, I\u2019m just a little behind you \u2014 close enough to take your hand.\u201d (Cohen died less than four months after Ihlen, on November 7th of that year.)<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The trailer touches on Cohen and Ihlen meeting each other in 1960 on the Greek island of Hydra, while the future folk icon was still a struggling writer. The pair lived a \u201cdream life\u201d in a creative, bohemian community \u2014 before Cohen ascended to late Sixties stardom as a songwriter in the U.S. From there, as the preview shows, their relationship grew more complicated: \u201cHe could make women feel good about themselves, but he couldn\u2019t give himself to them,\u201d an interviewee notes. \u201cBecause he couldn\u2019t give himself away.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Nick Broomfield (<em>Whitney: Can I Be Me<\/em>, <em>Kurt &amp; Courtney<\/em>) directed <em>Words of Love<\/em>, which hits theaters July 5th. The film, which premiered at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/movies\/movie-features\/sundance-2019-david-crosby-miles-davis-leonard-cohen-docs-786148\/\">2019 Sundance Film Festival<\/a>, utilizes previously unseen footage from both Broomfield and documentarian D.A.
