Joe Corr\u00e9, the son of punk pioneer and Sex Pistols<\/a> manager Malcolm McLaren<\/a> and designer Vivienne Westwood, has announced he is readying a documentary titled Wake Up Punk<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The film will focus on Corr\u00e9\u2019s bizarre 2016 celebration<\/a> of the 40th anniversary of the Sex Pistols\u2019 1976 single \u201cAnarchy in the U.K.,\u201d which helped spawn the punk movement; to mark the occasion, Corr\u00e9 publicly burned an estimated $6 million worth of punk memorabilia, including a rare acetate copy of the single, Variety<\/em> reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Nigel Askew will produce and direct Wake Up Punk<\/em> which, according to the film\u2019s Twitter<\/a>, will premiere at the Sheffield Doc\/Fest in June. The documentary will reportedly also posit that activism is the new punk and that the punk of the Seventies has \u201cbecome a marketing exercise to sell you something you don\u2019t need.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wake Up Punk<\/em>\u2018s arrival follows news of an unauthorized biopic<\/a> about the Sex Pistols titled Only Anarchists Are Pretty<\/em>. Corr\u00e9 told Variety<\/em> of the film, \u201cNo one has spoken to me, Malcolm\u2019s only child, nor have they spoken to Vivienne Westwood, nor have they spoken to Malcolm\u2019s elder brother, Stuart Edwards. Whatever they\u2019re making will be based on fantasy and fabrication.\u201d<\/p>\n

John Lydon, the former Johnny Rotten, previously tweeted<\/a> of the biopic, \u201cYou may have seen recent reports of a Sex Pistols biopic. For the avoidance of doubt this film would be unauthorised, unofficial, and not endorsed by Sex Pistols.\u201d<\/p>\n
