The singer offered a rousing version of \u201cAmazing Grace\u201d at annual Pulitzer Prize luncheon at Columbia University\u2019s Low Memorial Library, which honored the 103rd class of Pulitzer winners.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-captioned data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/ByBMpJclUxW\/\" data-instgrm-version=\"12\" readability=\"-2.2851323828921\"><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-captioned data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/ByBtUR4DVtB\/\" data-instgrm-version=\"12\" readability=\"-6.9230769230769\"><\/blockquote>\n<p>In April, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/aretha-franklin-pulitzer-prize-special-citation-822807\/\">Pulitzer announced<\/a> it would be awarding Franklin, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/aretha-franklin-queen-of-soul-dead-at-76-119453\/\">died last year<\/a>, a posthumous special citation \u201cfor her indelible contribution to American music and culture for more than five decades.\u201d Franklin is one of only a few musicians to receive the Pulitzers\u2019 Special Citation for the arts and she is the first individual female musician to take the honor. As a tribute to the Queen of Soul, she decided to brave an all-night road trip to New York. Hudson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/articles\/news\/8513477\/jennifer-hudson-aretha-franklin-pulitzer-prize-ceremony\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">told the Associated Press<\/a>, \u201cI looked up and I thought, \u2018You know what, it\u2019s like Aretha\u2019s spirit is in me. She didn\u2019t believe in flying, she would drive.\u2019 I got here in time, five minutes early to sing, because I wasn\u2019t going to miss it. Honey I said, \u2018If I got to walk, if I got to crawl, I\u2019m going to get there.\u2019 And here I am \u2014 so it\u2019s in my heart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hudson will play Franklin in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/aretha-franklin-biopic-director-screenwriter-777833\/\">upcoming biopic<\/a> of the singer\u2019s life for MGM. The film, <em>Respect<\/em>, is being written by Oscar-winning&nbsp;<em>Thelma &amp; Louise<\/em> screenwriter Callie Khouri and directed by Liesl Tommy. Hudson was hand-picked by Franklin to star in the film. She said in a statement, \u201cIt is an absolute honor to be a part of bringing Ms. Franklin\u2019s story to audiences who adore her around the world. She is one of the most iconic and talented artists of all time and what a dream come true it is to portray her extraordinary life on screen.
