Patti Smith<\/a> has announced a new memoir, Year of the Monkey.<\/em> Published by Knopf, the book will be released on September 24th. Year of the Monkey<\/em> recounts the year 2016, which Smith spent in solidarity following the singer\u2019s run of New Year\u2019s concerts at the Fillmore in San Francisco. \u201cI began writing it on New Year\u2019s Day, 2016 in cafes, trains and strange motels by the sea, with no particular design, until page by page it became a book,\u201d Smith wrote on her Instagram<\/a> account. \u201cI\u2019m very excited to have new work to report!\u201d<\/p>\n

Smith\u2019s first memoir, 2010\u2019s Just Kids<\/a><\/em>, is a poignant retelling of her early life and relationship with the late artist Robert Mapplethorpe. Her second memoir, M Train<\/em>, was released in 2015. Smith is currently on tour, having recently played two sold out nights at New York\u2019s newly renovated Webster Hall. She\u2019s scheduled to perform in Europe this summer.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to hear Neil Young\u2019s old songs when I see him,\u201d Smith told Rolling Stone<\/em> last year.<\/a> \u201cSo if people want to hear \u2018Because the Night\u2019 for the 2,000th time, I\u2019ll give it to them as long as I can give it to them with real enthusiasm. I am not going to fake it. If I can really access the original impulse that drove me to write it, I\u2019ll sing it.\u201d<\/p>\n
