{"id":2444791,"date":"2019-05-30T20:16:45","date_gmt":"2019-05-31T02:16:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=842526"},"modified":"2019-05-30T20:16:45","modified_gmt":"2019-05-31T02:16:45","slug":"beastie-boys-ad-rock-mike-d-reflect-on-ill-communication-in-amazon-music-doc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kspn\/music-news\/beastie-boys-ad-rock-mike-d-reflect-on-ill-communication-in-amazon-music-doc\/","title":{"rendered":"Beastie Boys\u2019 Ad-Rock, Mike D Reflect on \u2018Ill Communication\u2019 in Amazon Music Doc"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Screen-Shot-2019-05-30-at-10.02.13-PM.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Surviving <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/beastie-boys\/\" id=\"auto-tag_beastie-boys\" data-tag=\"beastie-boys\">Beastie Boys<\/a> members Adam \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/ad-rock\/\" id=\"auto-tag_ad-rock\" data-tag=\"ad-rock\">Ad-Rock<\/a>\u201d Horovitz and Michael \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/mike-d\/\" id=\"auto-tag_mike-d\" data-tag=\"mike-d\">Mike D<\/a>\u201d Diamond reflect on the creative and personal maturation that informed 1994\u2019s <em>Ill Communication<\/em> in an Amazon Music mini-documentary about their classic fourth LP.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The clip \u2014 which also features interviews with keyboardist \u201cMoney\u201d Mark Nishita and producer Mario Caldato, along with archival footage of the band\u2019s late member, Adam \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/mca\/\" id=\"auto-tag_mca\" data-tag=\"mca\">MCA<\/a>\u201d Yauch \u2014 opens with an anecdote about writing and recording \u201cSabotage,\u201d the album\u2019s thunderous lead single. The song originated with Yauch\u2019s distorted bassline, followed by Diamond\u2019s drums and, finally, Horovitz\u2019s scrappy guitar lick.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt was the only song, really, that we recorded in a day,\u201d Horovitz says. \u201cLike, just the instrumental track. And \u2018boom,\u2019 we\u2019re like, \u2018That shit sounds cool.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">The film then cuts to SXSW 2019 in Austin, Texas, where the Diamond and Horovitz sit for an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/beastie-boys-sxsw-keynote-809098\/\">interview with Amazon Music\u2019s Nathan Brackett<\/a>. The duo chronicle the build-up to <em>Ill Communication<\/em> \u2014 including the lukewarm commercial response to their expensive, sample-heavy 1989 record, <em>Paul\u2019s Boutique<\/em>, and the laid-back grooves and live instrumentation that informed 1992\u2019s <em>Check Your Head<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe sucked, like really bad, at first,\u201d Horovitz says of this early period of experimenting on live instruments, influenced by acts like James Brown, Sly Stone and the Meters. \u201cIt didn\u2019t get that much better, but that was the thing that was really fun \u2014 that we sort of figured out a way to do it for ourselves.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">After a year of touring, they jumped straight back into the studio and crafted <em>Ill Communication<\/em> with, as Horovitz says, \u201ca better idea of how to put things together.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cBy the time we got to <em>Ill Communcation<\/em>, we\u2019d figured things out a little bit,\u201d says Diamond. \u201cBut Yauch, of course, kind of goes next level, and before we know it, he\u2019s playing the upright bass, trying to get on some Ron Carter-type shit. But really kind of pulling it off.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">The duo also look back on Yauch\u2019s sense of introspection, spirituality and feminism \u2014 the latter reflected in the lyrics to \u201cSure Shot,\u201d which includes the lines, \u201cI want to say a little something that\u2019s long overdue\/The disrespect to women has got to be through\/To all the mothers and the sisters and the wives and friends\/I want to offer my love and respect to the end.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIn the middle of all of these dumb jokes about whatever,\u201d Horovitz says, \u201cyour boy says some super heavy feminist shit in the early Nineties, and we\u2019re just like, \u2018Oh.&#8217;\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">In related Beasties news, Diamond\u2019s Beats 1 radio show, <em>The Echo Chamber<\/em>, will return to Apple Music on Sunday, June 2nd at 6:00 p.m. ET.
