This was a weird period of time where seemingly half the songs on the radio were either by Genesis or one of the many offshoot acts like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/phil-collins\/\" id=\"auto-tag_phil-collins\" data-tag=\"phil-collins\">Phil Collins<\/a>, Peter Gabriel, Mike and the Mechanics, or GTR.<\/p>\n<p>When Genesis hit the road in 1986 to promote <em>Invisible Touch<\/em>, the tour was sponsored by Michelob and they shot a commercial for the beer company that used \u201cTonight Tonight Tonight,\u201d which you can see right here. There\u2019s not much of a story to the spot beyond attractive yuppies enjoying their Michelobs at a bar while Genesis perform in the background. It would be tough to find 60 seconds on YouTube that look and feel more 1980s than this besides maybe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8TToLgW7zuc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Glenn Frey\u2019s \u201cYou Belong to the City\u201d<\/a> video, which almost seems to take place at the same bar with the same crowd of yuppies. (Watching it now, you half expect Patrick Bateman from <em>American Psycho<\/em> to pop into the frame and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_yM7Xe3HrT8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">start talking about the brilliance of Genesis<\/a> and Huey Lewis and the News.)<\/p>\n<p>Nobody at the time seemed to stop and realize that \u201cTonight Tonight Tonight\u201d is about a drug addict desperate for a fix and might not be appropriate for a commercial selling another addictive substance. \u201cI got some money in my pocket\/About ready to burn,\u201d the addict moans to his dealer in \u201cTonight Tonight Tonight.\u201d \u201cI don\u2019t remember where I got it\/I gotta get it to you\/So please answer the phone\/\u2018Cause I keep calling\/But you\u2019re never home\/What am I gonna do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By the end, our narrator is overtaken by the agony of withdrawal and screaming for help: \u201cOh, get me out of here\/Please get me out of here\/Just help me, I\u2019ll do anything, anything\/If you\u2019ll just help, get me out of here!\u201d Oh, and by the way, enjoy a cool, frosty glass of Michelob and watch your problems melt away.<\/p>\n<p>Genesis weren\u2019t the only rock stars of this era to appear in commercials for drinks. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=U7vYP1S9_qQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">David Bowie, Tina Turner<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=po0jY4WvCIc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Michael Jackson all shilled for Pepsi<\/a> while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0rl4OuLFrMs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Paula Abdul sold Coke<\/a> and Eric Clapton joined Genesis in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qWPAXt6jMgg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">appearing in a Michelob commercial.<\/a> Billy Joel dismissed all this as \u201crock and roller cola wars\u201d in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=eFTLKWw542g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">\u201cWe Didn\u2019t Start the Fire\u201d<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=KSSvzCNBvlQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Neil Young viciously mocked them in \u201cThis Note For You.\u201d<\/a> In a sad twist, Phil Collins later developed a significant drinking problem that nearly killed him and has been sober for years now.
