{"id":2444977,"date":"2019-06-04T21:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-06-05T03:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/?p=307435"},"modified":"2019-06-04T21:00:00","modified_gmt":"2019-06-05T03:00:00","slug":"aspen-city-manager-candidate-profile-distributed-nationally","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kspn\/local-news\/aspen-city-manager-candidate-profile-distributed-nationally\/","title":{"rendered":"Aspen city manager candidate profile distributed nationally"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<div class=\"caption-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"413\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2016\/08\/cityhall-atd-072016.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-post-image\" alt srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2016\/08\/cityhall-atd-072016.jpg 620w, https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2016\/08\/cityhall-atd-072016-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2016\/08\/cityhall-atd-072016-325x216.jpg 325w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The candidate profile for the next Aspen city manager is complete and a brochure detailing the job is currently being distributed for a national search.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The recruitment brochure, prepared by headhunting firm Peckham &amp; McKenney, details the priorities and challenges the community faces, including affordable housing, communications and public outreach, managed growth, water storage and quality of life, among others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The <a id=\"N0x2d78170N0x2e835c0:N0x2d78170N0x2ed2500\" href=\"https:\/\/www.peckhamandmckenney.com\/city-manager-city-of-aspen-colorado\">brochure<\/a> also states that the city manager must understand the \u201cneeds of the year-round resident and seasonal resident.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cThe new city manager will be an experienced, municipal leader who understands the delicate resort and community balance that makes Aspen unique and challenging,\u201d according to the brochure. \u201cThe city manager is a public servant, a collaborative problem solver, skilled listener and a champion of transparent and customer service oriented government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The city also is looking for a candidate who can foster civility, has political wisdom, is resilient and has the ability to manage complex and stressful situations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Drew Gorgey, who is handling recruitment for the city, said Tuesday that it will be challenging to find the right fit but is confident it will happen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cRecruiting into any resort community is difficult because it\u2019s not for everyone but Aspen invested on the <a id=\"N0x2d78170N0x2e83620:N0x2d78170N0x2ed27d0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/local\/recruiter-gets-an-earful-from-citizens-on-aspens-next-city-manager\/\">front end involving the public<\/a>,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The city held community open houses in May to allow members of the public to offer their insights and feedback on the most desirable qualities they\u2019d like to see in the city\u2019s next leader.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Current council members and council-elect, as well as city staff, also were involved early in the process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cThe authentic and candid feedback that helped build the candidate profile was a testament to the community and the public\u2019s level of engagement with this process,\u201d said Alissa Farrell, interim assistant city manager and human resources director.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">It has been over two decades since Aspen recruited for a new city manager; Steve Barwick was <a id=\"N0x2d78170N0x2e83680:N0x2d78170N0x2ed2aa0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/trending\/a-culimination-of-missteps-led-to-aspen-city-managers-exit\/\">asked to resign<\/a> in January after 19 years in the position.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Soon after, Assistant City Manager Sara Ott became interim city manager and has a contract with the city until Sept. 1 to be in that role.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The new city manager will make between $180,000 and $214,000, plus benefits and a housing stipend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The deadline for candidates to apply is July 8.
