{"id":2445075,"date":"2019-06-07T07:06:54","date_gmt":"2019-06-07T13:06:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=845540"},"modified":"2019-06-07T07:06:54","modified_gmt":"2019-06-07T13:06:54","slug":"hear-toots-and-the-maytals-take-country-roads-during-spotify-session","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kspn\/music-news\/hear-toots-and-the-maytals-take-country-roads-during-spotify-session\/","title":{"rendered":"Hear Toots and the Maytals Take \u2018Country Roads\u2019 During Spotify Session"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/shutterstock_9771169d.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\">Reggae stalwarts Toots and the Maytals stopped by Spotify\u2019s studios in New York to record a session that included their clever interpretation of John Denver\u2019s classic, \u201cTake Me Home, Country Roads,\u201d as well as their new song, \u201cA Song Call Marley.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Toots and the Maytals slid into \u201cTake Me Home\u201d \u2014 which they originally covered on their 1973 album <em>In the Dark<\/em> \u2014 with a robust, gospel-tinged intro that ended with frontman Frederick Nathaniel \u201cToots\u201d Hibbert unleashing a stunning vocal run. The Maytals then kicked out a groove that mixed a reggae backbeat with country flourishes while Toots sang the song\u2019s iconic chorus with the perfect little lyric tweak: \u201cCountry road, take me home\/To the place, I belong\/West Jamaica, my oh my\/Take me home, country road.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The band also breezed through \u201cA Song Call Marley,\u201d an understated reggae gem that doubles as an effusive tribute to the titular reggae legend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Toots and the Maytals <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/toots-and-the-maytals-bring-euphoric-classic-funky-kingston-to-fallon-703739\/\">premiered<\/a> \u201cA Song Call Marley\u201d on <em>The Tonight Show<\/em> last July before releasing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/toots-and-the-maytals-celebrate-reggae-friendship-on-new-song-a-song-call-marley-715282\/\">studio version<\/a> a month later. At the time, it marked the first piece of new music from band in six years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Toots and the Maytals recently kicked off a lengthy summer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tootsandthemaytals.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">tour<\/a>.
