{"id":2445094,"date":"2019-06-07T13:52:39","date_gmt":"2019-06-07T19:52:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=845679"},"modified":"2019-06-07T13:52:39","modified_gmt":"2019-06-07T19:52:39","slug":"soul-legend-patrice-rushen-preps-elektra-era-compilation-remind-me","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kspn\/music-news\/soul-legend-patrice-rushen-preps-elektra-era-compilation-remind-me\/","title":{"rendered":"Soul Legend Patrice Rushen Preps Elektra-Era Compilation \u2018Remind Me\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Patrice-Rushen.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\">Soul, jazz and disco star Patrice Rushen will collect her most memorable recordings from her days on Elektra in a new compilation, <em>Remind Me: The Classic Elektra Recordings 1978 \u2013 1984<\/em>, out July 19th via Strut Records.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The 15-track project will feature all of Rushen\u2019s chart singles from that era, including R&amp;B and dance hits like \u201cHaven\u2019t You Heard,\u201d \u201cFeels So Real\u201d and \u201cForget Me Nots\u201d (the latter was her highest <em>Billboard<\/em> Hot 100 hit, peaking at Number 23; it later served as the foundation for Will Smith\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=q0oFiSRM3Kw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">\u201cMen in Black\u201d theme<\/a>). The compilation will also include the 12-inch single versions of several tracks, as well as other cuts that later provided classic samples, like \u201cRemind Me\u201d (used on Mary J. Blige\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DhIO49ZoPuA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">\u201cYou Remind Me\u201d<\/a>) and \u201cWhere There Is Love\u201d (used on Mobb Deep\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=KdF8wEfP6MQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">\u201cTemperature\u2019s Rising\u201d<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Amzp7W0RkPA?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Rushen got her start in the early Seventies, releasing her first three albums on the jazz label Prestige, before jumping to Elektra\/Asylum and joining its new pop and jazz division, which was being led by Donald Byrd and Grover Washington, Jr. Working with top musicians like Gerald Albright, Leon \u201cNdugu\u201d Chancler and Freddie Washington, Rushen crafted songs that mixed her classical and jazz background with contemporary disco and R&amp;B.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThe idea was to create music that was good for commercial radio\/R&amp;B,\u201d Rushen said in a statement. \u201cWe were all making sophisticated dance music, essentially.\u201d She added of her collaborators, \u201cL.A. musicians were not so locked into tradition. None of us were accustomed to limitation and the record label left us to take our own direction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Rushen released five albums with Elektra, starting with 1978\u2019s <em>Patrice<\/em> and ending with 1984\u2019s <em>Now<\/em>. Her most successful project was 1982\u2019s <em>Straight From the Heart<\/em>, which earned Rushen two Grammy nods, Best Female R&amp;B Vocal Performance for \u201cForget Me Nots\u201d and Best R&amp;B Instrumental Performance for \u201cNumber One.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em>Remind<\/em> <em>Me<\/em> is available to <a href=\"https:\/\/strut.k7store.com\/release\/131739-patrice-rushen-you-remind-me-the-classic-elektra-recordings-1978-1984-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">pre-order<\/a> and will be available as a triple LP vinyl set and a single CD set, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/patricerushen.bandcamp.com\/album\/you-remind-me-the-classic-elektra-recordings-1978-1984\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">digitally<\/a>.
