{"id":2445166,"date":"2019-06-10T22:48:00","date_gmt":"2019-06-11T04:48:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/new-aspen-city-council-sworn-in\/"},"modified":"2019-06-11T06:58:24","modified_gmt":"2019-06-11T12:58:24","slug":"new-aspen-city-council-sworn-in","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kspn\/local-news\/new-aspen-city-council-sworn-in\/","title":{"rendered":"New Aspen City Council sworn in"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText DropCap\">Within seconds of taking the Aspen mayor\u2019s seat after a brief swearing-in ceremony Monday evening, Torre asked everyone in council chambers to share in taking a collective deep breath.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cNow, let\u2019s go,\u201d he said to the room full of supporters and observers, later saying, \u201cI see this as a win to keep working \u2026 we have a great group up here and we\u2019ll do great work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Torre, 49, <a id=\"N0x1169110N0x10cbde0:N0x1169110N0x1197da0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/torre-is-aspens-newest-mayor\/\">won the mayor\u2019s race<\/a> in an April runoff election against current Councilwoman Ann Mullins.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">A former councilman, this was Torre\u2019s sixth attempt at the mayor\u2019s seat in the past two decades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">He, along with new council members <a id=\"N0x1169110N0x10cbe40:N0x1169110N0x1197f50\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/aspen-city-council-skippy-mesirow-rachel-richards-win-seats\/\">Rachel Richards and Skippy Mesirow<\/a>, were sworn in Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">They replaced former Mayor Steve Skadron, and Councilmen Adam Frisch and Bert Myrin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">After a series of complimentary comments from fellow electeds, the former council members thanked each other, city staff and the community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Skadron attempted unsuccessfully to hold back tears as he reflected on his 12 years at the council table and hit the gavel for the last time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">It didn\u2019t take long for Torre to pick up where Skadron left off, promising that issues that arose in his campaign will be acted on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">He said better communication between City Hall and the community will occur under his administration, along with meaningful work on affordable housing in terms of protecting <a id=\"N0x1169110N0x10cbea0:N0x1169110N0x11982b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/capital-reserves-pitch-for-affordable-housing-gets-mixed-reception\/\">current inventory<\/a> and building more units.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">He also said this council will continue to build on the city\u2019s environmental stewardship efforts, including reducing Aspen\u2019s carbon footprint and plastics use.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cI\u2019m excited for the job and the work ahead of us,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">He said he will hold office hours every Monday from noon to 2 p.m. in the mayor\u2019s office on the second floor of City Hall.
