{"id":2445414,"date":"2019-06-17T10:40:15","date_gmt":"2019-06-17T16:40:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=849019"},"modified":"2019-06-17T10:40:15","modified_gmt":"2019-06-17T16:40:15","slug":"shaggy-how-i-wrote-this","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kspn\/music-news\/shaggy-how-i-wrote-this\/","title":{"rendered":"Shaggy: How I Wrote This"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/shaggy-how-i-wrote-this.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\">Reggae and dancehall mainstay <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/shaggy\/\" id=\"auto-tag_shaggy\" data-tag=\"shaggy\">Shaggy<\/a> offers an in-depth look at his new song, \u201cYou.\u201d He describes it as the anti-\u201cIt Wasn\u2019t Me,\u201d in the latest installment of <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>\u2018s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/how-i-wrote-this\/\" id=\"auto-tag_how-i-wrote-this\" data-tag=\"how-i-wrote-this\">How I Wrote This<\/a>.\u201d The track features 19-year-old Canadian singer Alexander Stewart, who joins Shaggy for a performance of \u201cYou\u201d at the end of the clip.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">While the musician\u2019s 2000 smash \u201cIt Wasn\u2019t Me\u201d told a wild story of infidelity and not-so-plausible deniability, Shaggy says \u201cYou\u201d is \u201cabout your admiration for this one girl, it\u2019s like having goggles \u2026 This is all about focusing on that one person who has caught your eye and who you feel is your soulmate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cYou\u201d combines elements of EDM, tropical house, dancehall and Afrobeat, and the song began with an infectious synth line producer Dwayne Shippy came up with in the studio. The drums, a warped vocal sample, the melody and the lyrics quickly followed, but Shaggy says, to complete the song, they needed another vocalist who had the range to match the song\u2019s high key. At first he toyed with the idea of getting a female singer to give the song a call-and-response vibe, but then his manager recommended he reach out to Stewart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cHoly shit he nailed it,\u201d Shaggy says of Stewart\u2019s vocal turn on the song. \u201cThe color in his voice, the tone, it complemented the instrumentation. And then a little superstition got in there too, because every hit record [I\u2019ve had] is from singers who are young, unknown. Like when I did \u2018It Wasn\u2019t Me,\u2019 Rikrok was this young, unknown singer that no one knew; Rayvon and \u2018Angel\u2019 was the same. So I just think I have luck with that, so with Alexander I was like, \u2018Yeah, let\u2019s rock with it.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cYou\u201d appears on Shaggy\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/shaggy-new-album-wah-gwaan-release-date-791234\/\">new album, <em>Was Gwaan?!<\/em><\/a> which was released in May.
