Cooper Ave., which are in the heart of the pedestrian mall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">JAS <a id=\"N0x2d321f0N0x2d290c0:N0x2d321f0N0x2d364d0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/new-jas-performance-center-will-be-built-around-historic-red-onion-in-downtown-aspen\/\">announced<\/a> last August that it is under contract to purchase the second floor of the Red Onion building and adjacent upstairs spaces for $15 million for a new performance center.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">As part of the contract, Hunt will build out the spaces to suit JAS\u2019s needs. The deal closes when the space is complete.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Hunt said Tuesday that building plans have been submitted to the city and are under review.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cI hope we will be in a position to start construction in April,\u201d he sad.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Plans include a pedestrian mall front entrance that will be a two-story gallery of artist photos from JAS\u2019s 28-year collection. A new terrace will be built off the second floor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">That building\u2019s second floor will connect to the top level of the original Red Onion, where there will be a bar with direct sight lines to an elevated stage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">That performance area, located above what is now an empty storefront next to the Red Onion, will feature a terrace overlooking the mall that offers a stage view for people sitting outside during the summer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Hunt said the JAS Center is one of the more exciting projects he\u2019s got going in the downtown core.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cI think it\u2019s the coolest thing ever,\u201d Hunt said, adding that he hopes the renovated space pays homage to the history of musicians who performed at the Red Onion in the 1950s like Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cImagine how charming it will be to have that outdoor space where people can sit down on the mall and poach a free concert.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Establishing a permanent home for JAS in Aspen\u2019s core has been central in the nonprofit\u2019s strategic plan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Horowitz said this weekend\u2019s lineup of musicians playing at seven <a id=\"N0x2d321f0N0x2d29120:N0x2d321f0N0x2d36b90\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/entertainment\/jazz-aspens-june-experience-moving-from-benedict-tent-to-multiple-venues-downtown-this-summer\/\">different venues<\/a> is a perfect example of why the JAS Center is needed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cIt completely ties into why we need a permanent home,\u201d he said. \u201cEverything you hear this weekend \u2026 all of that could exist under one roof.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Horowitz said information on the JAS Center plans will be displayed in the Durant Street Donor Tent as part of its quiet fundraising campaign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cWe\u2019re updating people this weekend,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Once plans are more set and approvals are in place, the \u201cKeep the Music Playing\u201d campaign will roll out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">It\u2019s a $25 million capital campaign of which $7.5 million has been pledged, according to Horowitz.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The first phase is $15 million and then rest will come in the form of naming rights as the project progresses, Horowitz said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Plans will need to be reviewed and approved by the citizen-led historic preservation commission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText Tagline\"><a href=\"mailto:csackariason@aspentimes.com\">csackariason@aspentimes.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/local\/jazz-performance-space-planned-for-downtown-aspen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">via:: The Aspen Times<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As the Jazz Aspen Snowmass\u2019 June Experience kicks off today with multiple artists performing at numerous venues around the downtown core through the weekend, the nonprofit is quietly planning for its permanent home above the historic Red Onion.
