Thanks to the Billy Ray Cyus-featuring, Nine Inch Nails-sampling \u201cOld Town Road,\u201d Lil Nas X<\/a> has established himself as a genre-bending phenomenon. The country-rap track has dominated the charts for much of the spring and summer, and on his follow-up to the unexpected smash he further celebrates the glory of 1991. \u201cPanini,\u201d the first song to be released from a forthcoming EP, leads with an interpolation of Nirvana<\/a>\u2019s \u201cIn Bloom\u201d \u2014 which was also, apparently, Nas\u2019 introduction to the music of Nirvana.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of songs will even come to me [when] I\u2019m sleeping or something,\u201d he explained to Zane Lowe during a Beats 1 interview. \u201cLike a melody. And I\u2019m like, \u2018Wow, that\u2019s fly.\u2019 But the craziest thing about \u201cPanini\u201d is it introduced me to Nirvana\u2019s album Nevermind<\/em>. I always seen the cover, but I never actually listened to it.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the 20-year-old, he didn\u2019t realize that the melody on the chorus was similar to the one on \u201cIn Bloom,\u201d which led to a Nirvana writing credit on the track. The song, which is featured on his debut EP 7<\/em>, got the final blessing from the Resident Millennial of the Nirvana estate, Frances Bean Cobain. Lil Nas X tweeted a \u201cthank you\u201d to the daughter of Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love.<\/p>\n

Now, the rising star considers himself a fan. \u201cI\u2019ve been listening to it a lot lately actually,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n

Of course, Lil Nas X was born nearly eight years after Nevermind<\/em> caused its own cultural phenomenon \u2014 so not knowing Nirvana isn\u2019t totally<\/em> insane, but sure does make this writer feel incredibly old. Still, with accidental Nine Inch Nails (his producer discovered the \u201cOld Town Road\u201d sample while jumping around YouTube) and Nirvana samples under his belt, Lil Nas X should keep this trend going. Someone play him some Smashing Pumpkins, Hole and Pearl Jam as soon as possible: The culture needs a full album\u2019s worth of wacky, genre-defying interpolations of the alt-rock canon.<\/p>\n
