{"id":2445639,"date":"2019-06-23T14:40:03","date_gmt":"2019-06-23T20:40:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=851549"},"modified":"2019-06-23T14:40:03","modified_gmt":"2019-06-23T20:40:03","slug":"dave-bartholomew-songwriter-and-fats-domino-collaborator-dead-at-100","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kspn\/music-news\/dave-bartholomew-songwriter-and-fats-domino-collaborator-dead-at-100\/","title":{"rendered":"Dave Bartholomew, Songwriter and Fats Domino Collaborator, Dead at 100"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/GettyImages-461187365.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>Dave Bartholomew, the New Orleans musician, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/fats-domino\/\" id=\"auto-tag_fats-domino\" data-tag=\"fats-domino\">Fats Domino<\/a> collaborator and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee who co-wrote the R&amp;B classic \u201cAin\u2019t That a Shame,\u201d has died at the age of 100.<\/p>\n<p>Bartholomew died Sunday at a New Orleans-area hospital, his son Dave Bartholomew Jr. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apnews.com\/c6eebc493fe94c1fb52cec412675a4b3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">confirmed to the <em>Associated Press<\/em><\/a>. \u201cHis body simply broke down. Daddy was 100 years and six months old. It was just that time,\u201d Bartholomew Jr. said.<\/p>\n<p>A trumpeter, bandleader, producer and arranger who worked with artists like Domino, Lloyd Price, Smiley Lewis and Shirley &amp; Lee, the Louisiana-born Bartholomew had a lasting impact on both the music of New Orleans and R&amp;B of the Fifties, which in turn inspired the rock music that emerged in the early Sixties.<\/p>\n<p>His 14-year partnership with Domino, which began in 1949 when the two co-wrote and recorded Domino\u2019s career-launching hit \u201cThe Fat Man,\u201d yielded R&amp;B gems like \u201cI\u2019m in Love Again,\u201d \u201cI\u2019m Walkin\u2019,\u201d \u201cValley of Tears,\u201d \u201cMy Girl Josephine,\u201d \u201cWhole Lotta Loving\u201d and the classic \u201cAin\u2019t That a Shame,\u201d which would later be covered by artists like Cheap Trick, John Lennon, Paul McCartney and more.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xbfMlk1PwGU?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe never sat down to write anything,\u201d Bartholomew <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nola.com\/entertainment\/2019\/06\/dave-bartholomew-new-orleans-composer-who-helped-create-rock-n-roll-dies-at-100-report.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">told the <em>Times-Picayune<\/em><\/a> of his collaborations with Domino. \u201cHe and I just played. If we started a song and we got lost\u2026 I remember one time on \u2018I\u2019m in Love Again,\u2019 we went outside and somebody said, \u2018Don\u2019t let the dog bite you.\u2019 So we come back and put that in the song. We always had an awful lot of rhythm in our world, plus the blues, and New Orleans being known for its second-line, we considered that, too. With that, and what we added to it, we were very lucky. It went over big.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bartholomew is credited with adding the brassy arrangements, inspired by the \u201cBig Beat \u201d sound of New Orleans, to Domino\u2019s famed renditions of \u201cBlueberry Hill\u201d and \u201cMy Blue Heaven.\u201d Both \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-lists\/500-greatest-songs-of-all-time-151127\/fats-domino-aint-it-a-shame-164309\/\">Ain\u2019t That a Shame<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-lists\/500-greatest-songs-of-all-time-151127\/fats-domino-blueberry-hill-45351\/\">Blueberry Hill<\/a>\u201d were named to <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>\u2018s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Pm4l43exh2M?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>An inductee into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, Bartholomew penned hits like Chuck Berry\u2019s Number One novelty hit \u201cMy Ding-A-Ling,\u201d \u201cBlue Monday\u201d (popularized by Domino and covered by Dr. John, Buddy Holly and others) and \u201cOne Night,\u201d a Smiley Lewis hit that Elvis Presley recorded as part of his 1968 comeback special. Bartholomew also produced Lloyd Price\u2019s 1952 hit \u201cLawdy Miss Clawdy\u201d and co-wrote \u201cWitchcraft,\u201d a hit for the Spiders that Presley covered in 1963.<\/p>\n<p>After a collaborative hiatus that stretched the Seventies and Eighties, Bartholomew and Domino reunited at the 1999 Jazz &amp; Heritage Festival in New Orleans. In 2014, the pair both attended a screening of the documentary <em>The Big Beat<\/em> about their impact on music. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/fats-domino-rock-and-roll-pioneer-dead-at-89-119883\/\">Domino died in October 2017<\/a>.
