{"id":2445839,"date":"2019-06-29T10:38:12","date_gmt":"2019-06-29T16:38:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=853725"},"modified":"2019-06-29T10:38:12","modified_gmt":"2019-06-29T16:38:12","slug":"watch-the-specials-perform-discuss-career-on-cbs-this-morning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kspn\/music-news\/watch-the-specials-perform-discuss-career-on-cbs-this-morning\/","title":{"rendered":"Watch the Specials Perform, Discuss Career on \u2018CBS This Morning\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Screen-Shot-2019-06-29-at-9.03.46-AM.png\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>Following the release of their long-awaited eighth studio album <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/review-british-ska-punk-legends-the-specials-return-in-top-form-on-encore-787642\/\"><em>Encore<\/em><\/a> in February, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/the-specials\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-specials\" data-tag=\"the-specials\">the Specials<\/a> delivered a three-song performance on Saturday\u2019s edition of <em>CBS This Morning<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8jrHfvlaUMQ?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The British ska-punk icons ran through renditions of their latest album\u2019s \u201cVote for Me\u201d and \u201cBlam Blam Fever,\u201d which is a cover by The Valentines, as well as their own 1979 hit \u201cA Message to You, Rudy.\u201d <em>Encore<\/em> is the first album of original songs by the Specials since 1998\u2019s&nbsp;<em>Guilty \u2019til Proved Innocent!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/B01FPf3jhas?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Formed in Coventry in the late 1970s, the Specials created a fusion of ska, punk, and new wave, later influencing artists like No Doubt and Sublime. Alongside their performance, the Specials\u2019 original members guitarist Lynval Golding, bassist Horace Panter and lead singer Terry Hall sat down with host Anthony Mason to discuss how their biracial identities influenced their sound over the years.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lkwxsoGJNok?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cCoventry was a multi-racial city before multiracialism was invented, I think,\u201d Panter told Mason, adding that the group \u201chad this idea to fuse reggae with punk and it took about two or three years to finally decide on using ska as our starting point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mason addressed the fact that the band ended up having their first No. 1 album in their home country on their 40th anniversary with <em>Encore<\/em>. \u201cWe decided we wanted to make a record about a week before the release where the record company was saying&nbsp;it was either going to be you or Hugh Jackman at No. 1. And it was like, what\u2019s he got that we haven\u2019t got?
