With Dido\u2019s \u201cThank You\u201d sampled in between each anguished verse, it\u2019s one of the Detroit rapper\u2019s heaviest songs. That\u2019s what pop singer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/alec-benjamin\/\" id=\"auto-tag_alec-benjamin\" data-tag=\"alec-benjamin\">Alec Benjamin<\/a> thought when he first heard it. He covered the song on the most recent episode of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/spotify\/\" id=\"auto-tag_spotify\" data-tag=\"spotify\">Spotify<\/a>\u2019s Under Cover podcast.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gOMhN-hfMtY?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went back through all of Eminem\u2019s old records, and when I found \u2018Stan\u2019 it gave me this visceral feeling in my gut,\u201d Benjamin said. His life was changed at eight-years-old after he discovered a CD of <em>The Eminem Show.<\/em> He\u2019s been a die-hard fan ever since. \u201c[Eminem] was the first artist where I was like, \u2018I <em>need<\/em> to make an effort to listen to this music.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStan\u201d influenced Benjamin\u2019s appreciation for music and songwriting. \u201cThis song is like a journey. It\u2019s a really sad story \u2014 it\u2019s a very sad, but incredibly well told, brilliant, genius story \u2026 When I got to the end of the song, and you find out that he\u2019s writing a letter to somebody who\u2019s already passed away, and the way he realizes and ties it together \u2026 it was about the storytelling, which got me hooked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Benjamin\u2019s cover was inspired by a live Eminem performance, which he describes as \u201cslightly more stripped than the original.\u201d As an acoustic artist, he knew covering \u201cStan\u201d was a risk. \u201cI never rap \u2014 I\u2019m not a rapper, I don\u2019t pretend to be a rapper.\u201d But, he does have one advantage. \u201cMost rappers can\u2019t sing the Dido part, and that\u2019s pretty essential to the song.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/alec-benjamin-covers-eminem-854199\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">via:: Rolling Stone<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Eminem\u2019s \u201cStan\u201d tells the six-minute tale of an obsessive fan\u2019s downward spiral.
