{"id":2445906,"date":"2019-07-01T19:21:33","date_gmt":"2019-07-02T01:21:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=854497"},"modified":"2019-07-01T19:21:33","modified_gmt":"2019-07-02T01:21:33","slug":"fiona-apple-pledges-two-years-of-criminal-royalties-to-refugees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kspn\/music-news\/fiona-apple-pledges-two-years-of-criminal-royalties-to-refugees\/","title":{"rendered":"Fiona Apple Pledges Two Years of \u2018Criminal\u2019 Royalties to Refugees"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/GettyImages-925824254.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/fiona-apple\/\" id=\"auto-tag_fiona-apple\" data-tag=\"fiona-apple\">Fiona Apple<\/a> is donating the 2019 and 2020 earnings from TV and movie placements of her song \u201cCriminal\u201d to the <a href=\"https:\/\/whiletheywait.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">While They Wait<\/a> fund, which assists refugees with basic necessities, immigration fees and legal services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAfter months and months of reading the news about how my country is treating refugees, I\u2019ve become gutted with frustration trying to figure out the best way to help,\u201d the singer-songwriter wrote on <a href=\"https:\/\/fionaapplerocks.tumblr.com\/post\/185962917639\/help-the-wrongly-criminalized-get-justice\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Tumblr<\/a>, adding, \u201cIt seems to me that the best way I can help detainees is to contribute to payment of their legal fees.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Apple said that \u201cCriminal,\u201d the Grammy-winning single from her 1996 debut LP, <em>Tidal<\/em>, is her \u201cmost requested song\u201d for television and film spots. And money generated from the track will help refugees secure \u201crepresentation and guidance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWhen they are separated from their children they need help navigating the system,\u201d she said. \u201cThey need to be bailed out of prison.
