He joined up with Springsteen right before <em>Born to Run<\/em> was recorded in 1974 and has played a pivotal role in his career ever since, even staying with him on the <em>Human Touch<\/em> tour in 1992 when the rest of the group was fired. \u201cIt was a harsh situation at that particular moment,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/40-years-of-e-street-roy-bittan-on-bruce-beach-pics-and-born-to-run-240923\/\">Bittan told <em>Rolling Ston<\/em>e in 2015.<\/a> \u201cI kind of always described it to myself like there was a plane crash and I was the only survivor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Springsteen\u2019s loyalty to Roy Bittan is easy to understand. He\u2019s a musician with incredible range and skill, popping up on everything from David Bowie\u2019s <em>Station to Station<\/em> to Meat Loaf\u2019s <em>Bat Out of Hell<\/em>, Stevie Nicks\u2019 <em>Bella Donna<\/em>, Bonnie Tyler\u2019s <em>Faster Than the Speed of Night<\/em> and Peter Gabriel\u2019s <em>Peter Gabriel II.<\/em> (Check out this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-lists\/e-streets-roy-bittan-on-collaborating-with-bowie-bob-seger-stevie-nicks-153519\/\">2015 interview with Bittan<\/a> where he talks about 10 of his favorite non-E Street Band sessions.)<\/p>\n<p>Many Springsteen fans first noticed Bittan on the <em>Born to Run<\/em> tour where the show would sometimes begin with Springsteen and the keyboardist alone onstage playing a stripped-down rendition of \u201cThunder Road.\u201d That\u2019s the version of the song that opens the <em>Live 1975-85<\/em> box set and they resurrected it on select shows on the 2012 <em>Wrecking Ball<\/em> tour. Here\u2019s a video from London\u2019s Hyde Park on July 12th, 2012 where they bring it back.<\/p>\n<p>Springsteen himself turns 70 on September 23rd, but that\u2019s not going to stop him from recording an E Street Band album later this year and, if he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/bruce-springsteen-e-street-band-tour-840807\/\">sticks to a plan out outlined a few months back<\/a>, bringing the band back out on the road next year.
