Max B aims to demonstrate a new side of his artistry on \u201cBlack and I\u2019m Proud,\u201d the first official single from his upcoming<\/span> Negro Spirituals<\/span><\/em> album.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s about me really evolving as a person, evolving as an artist,\u201d the incarcerated rapper tells<\/span> Rolling Stone<\/span><\/em>. \u201cMy music five or six years ago \u2014 even before when I used to make music \u2014 it was good, but it lacked the experience I have today. The concept fell into my lap: I\u2019m gonna transform from the old Max B into a powerful new artist with a display of content that they aren\u2019t used to. I\u2019m trying to give the people some substance.\u201d The title and hook of his latest release echo one of James Brown\u2019s most famous singles, which became an anthem of empowerment during the 1960s. <\/span><\/p>\n

Max B\u2019s turn towards \u201csubstance\u201d was encouraged by his mother. In \u201cBlack and I\u2019m Proud,\u201d he raps about her influence, while<\/span> Paul Couture\u2019s menacing beat rumbles beneath him<\/span>: \u201cMama telling me, \u2018baby, what you preachin\u2019 is wrong\u2019\/They in love with your music, you should be teachin\u2019 them [in] songs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

But Max B has other concerns on his mind here as well. He doesn\u2019t think too highly of the musical competition \u2014 \u201cAll this bullshit music, they don\u2019t know when to stop.\u201d And he takes aim at unnamed detractors, rapping, \u201cthe people believe it\u2019s me that was draggin\u2019 \u2019em down.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf I got an issue, a personal problem, sometimes I put it in my music to address it,\u201d Max B tells<\/span> Rolling Stone.<\/span><\/em> \u201cI was talking about people in general, people that\u2019s not for what we\u2019re trying to do, they\u2019re trying to hold us back while we\u2019re trying to elevate and pick our people up.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Max B has been in prison since 2009, when he was sentenced to 75 years in prison, accused of being an accomplice to a robbery in New Jersey that ended in murder. (The rapper was not in the state at the time.) The conviction was later vacated in 2016, after a new legal team argued that Max\u2019s original trial lawyer had a conflict of interest in the case, according to<\/span> Associated Press<\/span><\/em><\/a>. His sentence was subsequently reduced to 20 years.<\/span><\/p>\n

This year he started to release new music: First the track \u201cHold On,\u201d which nods to Sade, and then \u201cDon\u2019t Push Me,\u201d which pays tribute to Grandmaster Flash and Ice Cube.<\/span><\/p>\n
