The word means \u201cokay,\u201d but, to quote Carbi B, \u201cOK is played out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office said Cardi B did not have ownership of or originate the word in <a href=\"http:\/\/tsdr.uspto.gov\/documentviewer?caseId=sn88333999&amp;docId=OOA20190507161443#docIndex=1&amp;page=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">their response<\/a> to the rapper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkurrr\u201d is a \u201ccommonplace term, message, or expression widely used by a variety of sources that merely conveys an ordinary, familiar, well-recognized concept or sentiment,\u201d the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office said (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/07\/01\/entertainment\/cardi-b-okurrr-trademark-trnd\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">via CNN<\/a>), adding the word is \u201ccommonly used in the drag community and by celebrities as an alternate way of saying \u2018OK\u2019 or \u2018something that is said to affirm when someone is being put in their place.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The decision also noted that variants of the word had previously been used in 2016 on <em>Keeping Up With the Kardashians<\/em> as well as <em>RuPaul\u2019s Drag Race<\/em>, with season six contestant Laganja Estranja credited with either <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LaganjaEstranja\/status\/738021078174339073\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">originating or popularizing<\/a> \u201cokurrr.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/cardi-b-okurrr-trademark-denied-855262\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">via:: Rolling Stone<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office denied Cardi B\u2019s application to trademark the rapper\u2019s quasi-catchphrase \u201cOkurrr.\u201d Cardi B\u2019s lawyer filed the application in March, with the rapper hoping to use the phrase exclusively \u2013 either with three R\u2019s, okurrr, or two, okurr \u2013 on a line of merchandise.
