{"id":2446037,"date":"2019-07-05T09:57:01","date_gmt":"2019-07-05T15:57:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=855890"},"modified":"2019-07-05T09:57:01","modified_gmt":"2019-07-05T15:57:01","slug":"hear-beck-join-bird-and-the-bee-on-campy-cover-of-van-halens-hot-for-teacher","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kspn\/music-news\/hear-beck-join-bird-and-the-bee-on-campy-cover-of-van-halens-hot-for-teacher\/","title":{"rendered":"Hear Beck Join Bird and the Bee on Campy Cover of Van Halen\u2019s \u2018Hot for Teacher\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/beck-and-bird-and-the-bee.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Bird and the Bee \u2014 the duo of singer Inara George and producer Greg Kurstin \u2014 have tapped <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/beck\/\" id=\"auto-tag_beck\" data-tag=\"beck\">Beck<\/a> for a delightfully campy cover of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/van-halen\/\" id=\"auto-tag_van-halen\" data-tag=\"van-halen\">Van Halen<\/a>\u2019s \u201cHot for Teacher.\u201d The track will appear on the Bird and the Bee\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/the-bird-and-the-bee-van-halen-aint-talking-bout-love-846329\/\">upcoming covers album<\/a>, <em>Interpreting the Masters: A Tribute to Van Halen<\/em>, out August 8th via No Expectations\/Release Me Records.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Bird and the Bee\u2019s version of \u201cHot for Teacher\u201d cleverly flips the hair metal classic into a hot jazz tune, with Eddie Van Halen\u2019s iconic guitar riff transformed into a rollicking organ rumble while George croons the tune as if she\u2019s on stage at a smokey lounge. The duo also do away with David Lee Roth\u2019s delightfully juvenile spoken word part, but in place of \u201cI dropped my pencil!\u201d it\u2019s Beck playing a substitute teacher named Mr. Goodbody who comes to class with a very specific lesson plan: \u201cWe\u2019ll be reviewing the text from <em>Moby Dick<\/em>, so please turn now to page\u2026 69.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Beck \u2014 who worked with Kurstin on his 2017 album <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/review-beck-gets-back-to-having-fun-with-chrome-plated-funk-of-colors-119072\/\"><em>Colors<\/em><\/a> \u2014 said of the collaboration, \u201cThe Bird and The Bee bring unforeseen angles to the Van Halen song book. Makes sense because, like Eddie Van Halen, Greg is a kind of musical wunderkind in his own right and Inara\u2019s vocals bring a cool counterpart to Diamond Dave\u2019s<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span> pyrotechnics. Making a cameo on their version of \u2018Hot For Teacher\u2019 felt like an extension of the kind of riffing and fooling around we do in the studio on a normal session.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Bird and the Bee\u2019s version of \u201cHot for Teacher\u201d follows previously released covers of \u201cPanama\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/the-bird-and-the-bee-van-halen-aint-talking-bout-love-846329\/\">Ain\u2019t Talking \u2018Bout Love<\/a>.\u201d The duo will also embark on a 15-date tour later this year, starting with a special show in Los Angeles on August 2nd that will feature Dave Grohl on drums and Justin Meldal-Johnsen on bass.
