He tried to maintain his dignity in the light of losing his independence.\u201d No cause of death was provided.<\/p>\n<p>Gilberto is considered the progenitor of bossa nova, or \u201cnew beat,\u201d a subgenre of the Brazilian samba that scaled back that style\u2019s percussion and arrangements. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2019\/07\/06\/739224759\/jo-o-gilberto-master-of-bossa-nova-dies-at-88\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">According to NPR<\/a>, Gilberto developed the sound while ensconced in a bathroom at his sister\u2019s house, crafting bossa nova by playing off the bathroom\u2019s tiled acoustics. Soon after in his native Brazil, Gilberto scored a huge hit in 1959 with a cover of \u201cChega de Saudade.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gilberto\u2019s bossa nova began to reach American audiences thanks to its appearance on the soundtrack for the 1959 film <em>Black Orpheus<\/em>, which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film that year. Stan Getz and guitarist Charlie Byrd\u2019s chart-topping bossa nova-inspired <em>Jazz Samba<\/em> was released in 1962; the following year, Gilberto moved to the United States and, soon after, the guitarist collaborated with Getz on what would become Gilberto\u2019s most acclaimed and popular album.<\/p>\n<p>Released in 1964, <em>Getz\/Gilberto<\/em> would go on to win Album of the Year at the 1965 Grammys, the first non-English LP and the first jazz LP to capture that award. The multiplatinum-selling album also boasted the Record of the Year-winning hit \u201cThe Girl From Ipanema,\u201d a duet between Gilberto and his then-wife Astrud Gilberto. In 2012, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/SB10001424052702303649504577492603567202024\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Wall Street Journal<\/em><\/a> called \u201cThe Girl From Ipanema\u201d the second-most popular song ever recorded, behind the Beatles\u2019 \u201cYesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/j8VPmtyLqSY?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Getz\/Gilberto<\/em> also placed at Number 447 on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-lists\/500-greatest-albums-of-all-time-156826\/stan-getz-and-joao-gilberto-getz-gilberto-37564\/\"><em>Rolling Stone<\/em>\u2018s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time<\/a> list.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis uncanny ability to syncopate his vocal delivery, while keeping a simple groove was&nbsp;his&nbsp;trademark sound. Several others tried to imitate him, with no success,\u201d pianist Jovino Santos Neto told NPR Saturday. \u201cWhen people started to think that he was a bossa nova singer of Brazilian tunes, he challenged their assumptions by applying his style to boleros, Italian songs, Gershwin and later to the pop music of Brazil.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the ensuing decades, Gilberto continued to record and explore the bossa nova genre until the early Nineties, when his output ceased and the guitarist became, according the Brazilian media, a recluse.<\/p>\n<p>Gilberto\u2019s last studio album <em>Jo\u00e3o Voz e Viol\u00e3o<\/em> \u2013 produced by Caetano Veloso, one of the many Brazilian artists influenced by Gilberto \u2013 was released in 2000; the album won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best World Music Album. Gilberto\u2019s final live performance was a 2008 celebration of the 50th anniversary of bossa nova.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was Joao Gilberto, the greatest genius of Brazilian music, who was the definitive influence on my music,\u201d Brazilian singer Gal Costa wrote on social media (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.apnews.com\/754c43e211ac4592a4d22bab64b8030a\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">via <em>the Associated Press<\/em><\/a>). \u201cHe will be missed but his legacy is very important to Brazil and to the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Steven Van Zandt <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/StevieVanZandt\/status\/1147805546122227713\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">tweeted<\/a>, \u201cRIP Jo\u00e3o Gilberto.
