Dhani Harrison<\/a> has known Jeff Lynne<\/a> his entire life. But this summer is his first time touring with the Electric Light Orchestra. \u201cI\u2019ve played with him live, but I\u2019ve never played with him in his band,\u201d Harrison says. \u201cI played with Jeff and Tom [Petty] a lot \u2014 things like the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame the night they did dad\u2019s induction<\/a>. But their band is fantastic, this version of ELO.\u201d<\/p>\n

Harrison has been opening for the band since June, playing his solo music to packed arenas across the country. \u201cIt\u2019s been standing ovations,\u201d he says excitedly. \u201cMy walk off music every night is the intro to \u2018Rockaria!<\/a>\u2018 I get this beautiful, operatic way of leaving the stage. It\u2019s very funny.\u201d<\/p>\n

He\u2019s been playing his new single, \u201cMotorways (Erase It)\u201d<\/a> to the crowd every night. A psychedelic track with a robust beat, the song was inspired by Harrison\u2019s drives into London from his home in the countryside. \u201cIt\u2019s become almost inaccessible to me,\u201d he says. \u201cIt took me three hours to get in and three hours to get out, when it should take 20 minutes. Years and years ago on the way in to London, Banksy had just written on the side of the motorway in big white letters, \u2018It\u2019s not erased.\u2019 I was using it as an example of how the future is going to be.\u201d<\/p>\n

The opening line to the track, \u201cAll those dreams they take from you when you\u2019re young,\u201d comes from Harrison\u2019s perception of childhood. \u201cI guess everyone is pretty perfect when they\u2019re young,\u201d he speculates. \u201cAll of our imaginations are still in tact, we haven\u2019t been programmed yet. A lot of that is taken away from us by the time we\u2019ve been through school and by the time we\u2019ve got a job. I think we all spend the rest of our lives trying to return to that, that sense of curiosity and childlike innocence and dreams and imagination. It\u2019s only with that that we can get to the next level as beings.\u201d<\/p>\n

With the help of Big Black Delta\u2019s Jonathan Bates, \u201cMotorways (Erase It)\u201d was recorded in a single day. The single will be included on Harrison\u2019s sophomore album, a follow-up to his 2017 debut In Parallel.<\/em> The new record will be released as soon as Harrison is done completing it \u2014 if he can ever take time off his rigorous schedule from performing and scoring music.<\/p>\n

Harrison is so busy he hasn\u2019t even seen the movie Yesterday<\/em>.<\/a> \u201cI deal with all of the approving of the tracks and things, and I really like the idea of the story,\u201d he admits. \u201cI just haven\u2019t seen the film yet. I only just got to see Avengers: Endgame<\/em> the other day, and I\u2019m the biggest Marvel fan ever. I\u2019m a bit behind \u2026 I\u2019m sure I\u2019ll see it once it comes onto the airplane or hotel screen.\u201d<\/p>\n
